  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title at Mace is Trainee Construction Manager, though on site I am regarded as an Assistant Construction Manager. Internally I interact with my sites management team. External interactions are with the other apprentices and the team running the scheme, as well as our trainers and lecturers at London SouthBank where I do a HNC in construction funded by the company. I am responsible for my area on site, and helping out the management team. My projects so far have been in Mace Groups fit out sector, 'Como'. My first project was 24 Chiswell Street, a Cat A fit out to an existing building with 500 tenants occupying various floors. On this project I managed the aesthetic finishes of the core staircase. My next project was 1 Angel Court, a 26 story office building in the square mile. My role here was to snag the Cat A fit out and issue amendments to the contractors. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] Each day on site I manage my assigned area of work, making sure the contractors are working safely and to program. I resolve any problems with the work being carried out and learn from the management team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Many. Everyday I am learning. I've learnt masses about interior fit outs, how to manage works, safety procedures and requirements, how certain documents works, how buildings are constructed, what goes in to building a structure, how walls are constructed etc. To be honest I couldn't even name all the things I have learnt.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mace?
  • You get what you give in. I'm seen as an apprentice, but if you prove you are capable and pro active in what you do then it's looked past I some respects.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organization is great and the structure is brilliant but with a few minor weaker points, although it always improves as we feed back. Every time we feed back to the emerging talent team they actively seek to amend any areas we point out could improve.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A lot. The mace business school is great, they tailor the sessions to our level of knowledge on the subject. I've never sat in a training session and felt confused.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Countless. Any training I require, needs or questions that I have, they are straight back to us with support.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Highest paid apprenticeship anyone I went to college with has seen. Not only that but my travel is paid for as well, which seriously helps out. The company also issued me with a brand new laptop, smartphone and all of my safety equipment. They also pay 7% of my salary into my pension.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] We are told to take a minimum of one volunteering day a year (you still get paid for being at work despite of this) and the Mace fund doubles any amount of money you raise to donate to charity. Next year the apprentices in my year are looking at doing tough mudder. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] about 20 seconds away from Leicester Square... so the local community is very vibrant as you could imagine. There are 100's of events and classes to enroll to at Mace, even if they aren't specific to your job. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] Before Mace I cooked, cleaned and served in my local chippy... so theres no denying how much my world of opportunities has blown open.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's so enjoyable, I feel quite privileged and lucky to be on the scheme. It is that good.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Research the company and what they do. See if their programs and schemes cater to what you're looking for. Most importantly don't sit back and expect to be spoon fed, you get what you give in at Mace.
