  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have been on a work experience placement at the commercial law firm Pinsent Masons - it has been fantastic and I would very much recommend it to any students considering a law degree or career in law. We have alternated between different practice groups within the firm i.e. corporate, property and projects and carried out tasks under the supervision of allocated trainee solicitors. Most of the tasks involved some kind or research - often as preparation for cases or information that is circulated internally within the firm on recent regulatory changes or developments. We have also had a number of informative presentations - one was on the entry to a career path in law and another was on litigation, for example.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • We received IT training on the first day and I have also acquired numerous other skills through the tasks set for us. For example, I had to proof read documents, research specific legislation and past cases, learn how contract law works and research for news articles. We also had to do presentations in groups where we offered a plan of action for a business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed this experience - I have learnt so much about law and the way a firm operates that can only really come when you experience working in one rather from online. The open plan in the office is a great idea as instead of being shut in an office alone everyone is free to talk and work together - there is a very friendly vibe.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Pinsent Masons?
  • Everyone has been so friendly, welcoming and helpful and willing to answer questions. For example, just through informal conversations with my supervisors about my interest in law, they arranged two meetings for me with lawyers who work in the law I want to do to answer questions.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It was very well organised in terms of presentations and most practice group work - however as the trainees are so busy there were moments when you had to wait to get work from them until they were free. This meant sometimes you might finish work early and have to just sit and wait.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Lots of support was offered from all members of staff - particularly the supervisors were easy to contact via email if you had an queries. The live Facebook group chat was particularly useful for uni advice and questions about law in general.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • People were very friendly and approachable and always ready to give you help when you needed it. However it was good the work we did was independent so some things you had to just find out for yourself.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As this was a work experience placement it is voluntary work and a salary is not provided. You are provided with a five pound lunch voucher on the first day to spend in the hub.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As this was only a week long and we were students there were no outside activities available to us. There was a photo competition and opportunity to write a blog however for the website.

  • 9. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have gained so many skills, made connections, made friends, learnt so much and met so many lawyers willing to answer questions. It is also a fantastic thing to include on your CV or personal statement.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • Really try hard with your application as the placement is invaluable. Answer the questions carefully in lots of detail and try and show you have skills that will be valuable and tailored to the programme but also offer something unique about yourself. I must stress that this placement is for anyone considering a possible career in law NOT just those wanting to do a law degree - almost half of us wanted to do another degree and then a law conversion. Also think of any questions you have as there are so many opportunities to ask, and finally - try and keep as many contacts as possible, it will be useful later on!
