  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a trainee auditor. I need to check that the financial statments of a company gives a true and fair representation of how the company is doing in monetary terms. When on a client I need to interact with them on a daily basis, asking them questions and getting information from them to help with our audit.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently learning towards my qualification but on the way I have picked up some valuable excel skills and IT skills in general. I have also developed my skills on how to act and be professional at all times when on a client. More so when it comes to forwardness and getting information from a client whilst still being polite. I will obviously learn lots more skills as my training program progresses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I am enjoying my program immensely. The work is hard but I like how it makes me think about things and work things out constantly keeping my brain active. The teams I have worked within so far have been very friendly and helpful and I have learnt so much valuable information from them. Everyone is very friendly and the culture is good. It more than exceeds my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BDO?
  • So far I am feeling pretty valued. When you do good, it is recognised from people above you and they do let you know which is a nice feeling. I haven't found it hard to find work yet so get pretty involved with everything. External recognition; I am still a new trainee so haven't quite been able to witness this yet.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • So far the programme has been fairly decently constructed. The training right at the beginning of the course is very helpful for audits however I would suggest the school leavers doing the assurance course at the same time as the graduates however I suppose the course will be easier to understand if we can relate it to work/audits we have already completed. Not has a chance for self study exams yet as they are later in the year. I have a good relationship with my buddy and feel I can talk to them about anything and like how open the seniors are about their experiences.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is my go to at BPP for any help or issues I have with any tasks being set by the training provider and so far has been very good. She is easy to get hold of and holds regular meetings to check our progress. I think the only issue is we had a change in what taskbooks we needed to do after we had already started the previous versions. There was slight confusion but the crossover was quite smooth was the confusion was dealt with.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My counselling manager is very supportive and I feel comfortable talking to her about any issues. My buddy is the same. You can literally drop them an e-mail and they are happy to offer a helping hand. All this is above any expectations I had before I started.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As a new school leaver trainee, most of us still live with parents however I rent with my other half. Paying for my living costs is fairly easy with my partner but wouldn tbe able to do it alone however this is the same for all jobs when you just start so I have no issues with it. I live close to work so travel costs are not an issue. We do get mileage when travelling out to clients which is very good. As BDO subsidise some of the social events, social costs are fairly low also. I find the location of the office ideal as it is just outside of town so not too much traffic.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Lots of opportunities. BDO are involved with SCASS. I am on the internal social committee for BDO also so help organise alot of office social events. They also provide a slight discount on my gym membership which is very nice! BDO are also very good for when you voluteer to do things for charity and even have their own teams for events such as tough mudder.

  • 9. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Such a great environment to work in and am pleased with how everything has turned out.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • When applying, dont be afraid to tell BDO about every little thing you have done even if it a small fundraising stall on the side of a road! They are very interested in charity events. Interviews - Be yourself however still be professional but not too afraid to relax and find somehting in common with your interviewer. I would also suggest to wait till you are actually offered a placement before asking what sort of pay opportunities there are out of courtesy. And personally I would have like to be told that holiday needs to be booked wwaaaay in advance so that I could plan it all before I started if needs be.
