Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship

The Apprenticeship itself starts with a comprehensive induction and a week-long outward bound course, where you’ll get to meet and spend time with your fellow apprentices. From there, you’ll move down to our Engineering Training Academy at the Royal Naval base, HMS Sultan near Portsmouth. As well as supporting your career development and providing you with plenty of interesting work to get involved in, we’ll give you all the tools and equipment you need, a competitive salary, 23 days’ annual holiday (increasing after the first two years) and a company pension. Plus, of course, there are the long-term prospects you can look forward to at EDF Energy. All kinds of possibilities will open up as your career with us unfolds. And whichever path you choose to follow further down the line, you can be sure your time on the apprenticeship will stand you in good stead. From following a technical route through engineering, or becoming one of our team leaders and managing a team of skilled professionals, the possibilities are endless.

*Salary: Starting at £10,908 progressing up to £20,590

Year 1&2

Based at HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood Royal Naval bases, you’ll have access to excellent training facilities as part of our academic and workshop training programme. It’s here that you’ll get your introduction to engineering and develop those key skills. Towards the end of Year 1 you will be streamed into a specific discipline - Mechanical, Electrical or Control and Instrumentation.

Year 3&4

You’ll return to your base location and join the Maintenance team at the power station you applied to around the UK. Here, you’ll work alongside and learn from fully qualified professionals, developing your knowledge and skills at the same time as completing your academic and vocational qualifications. You'll also have the support from a full time Station Apprentice Coordinator to offer guidance whilst you learn about working on a power station. Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you’ll be awarded a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Certificate. By this point, you’ll also have gained a BTEC Level 3 as well as an excellent selection of practical skills. It’s everything you need to start your career and, if you excel, there may also be the option to progress onto further education such as a HNC. At the end of the four-year years, and as long as you fulfil all the requirements of the programme, we expect you to be appointed to a full time role within the organisation.

Requirements

The apprenticeship programme lays the foundations of engineering using maths and science principles you gained at school. So to be considered, you’ll need five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or Grade 4 and above in the new GCSE grading structure), National 5 or equivalent, including Maths, English and 2 of either Science, Technical or Engineering subjects. You’ll also need a talent for practical subjects, a desire to learn and develop your skills and a willingness to relocate as required.
