Want to solve some of the world’s biggest health challenges?

With over 300 years of innovation, we’re a science-led global healthcare company that delivers billions of innovative products each year. Join us and help millions of people do more, feel better, live longer.

Achieve your career goals on our apprentice programme

On our 4.5 year programme you’ll receive tailored on-the-job training from industry experts from day one combined with early responsibility to help you to develop and progress.

If you are offered a role; you will have a buddy or a mentor who will help you to prepare for joining GSK and will be there to offer support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship.

Working with both your line and programme manager we want to identify the right opportunities to help you succeed in the short term and throughout your career with us.

What will you do?

You will be part of the Research & Development (R&D) function based in the In-vivo Science and Delivery (IVSD) team based at our Ware site initially, then moving to Stevenage later in 2022.

Stevenage is GSK’s UK R&D Hub, which is the heart of innovation, discovering and developing differentiated, high-quality and needed medicines that are bringing transformational benefit to patients. The department is currently based at Ware to allow the Stevenage facility to be upgraded and to install new equipment allowing us to deliver more medicines to patients.

Your duties might include:

  • Working with laboratory animals so an affinity and caring attitude towards animals is critical.
  • Based within the animal facility you’ll gain technical, husbandry & welfare knowledge and skills required to run and manage in-vivo animal studies.
  • Attain a Home Office Licence enabling you to perform licensed procedures to support the portfolio.
  • Build knowledge of the range of animal models used within Pharma research, specifically model development and disease progression studies in Oncology, auto-immune diseases and for neuro-modulation therapies.
  • Learn how to use various state-of-the-art techniques and technology to use in studies and gain insight into a broad range of biology-based scientific disciplines critical to the drug discovery process, namely bio-imaging technology including MRI and optical imaging techniques as well as digital video cages that monitor the cage environment and animal behaviour and movement.
  • Supporting immunology and oncology projects that will eventually lead to the development of medicines for patients.
  • Use of IT systems such as Excel and data capturing systems.
  • Support and manage pre and post study paperwork.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, it is possible to secure a permanent role in GSK and continue to contribute to our mission. The large majority of our apprentices find permanent roles with us. For example some previous Apprentices have gone on to become Associate Scientists!

You’ll be excited by the thought of:

  • Building your laboratory skills and scientific knowledge in an R&D setting
  • Working as part of a team of scientists and interacting with vets and other departments to embed the 3R’s principles (Refinement, Replacement and Reduction) as well as maintaining and developing welfare standards and robust study design.
  • Studying towards your Bachelors Degree (BSc) in Applied Bioscience

Benefits include:

  • A competitive base salary of £17,500 per annum.
  • An annual bonus
  • Benefit programmes benchmarked against industry standards
  • A recognition programme to reward exceptional work by you and your team
  • Training and Development (including opportunities to attend annual Apprentice development events)
  • Access to employee health and well-being programmes
  • A fully-sponsored nationally recognised qualification
