Economist Degree Apprenticeship

The Government Economic Service Degree Apprenticeship Programme (GESDAP) is the UK’s first economics degree apprenticeship, we will give you the opportunity to gain valuable experience whilst receiving a tuition fee-free degree awarded by a TEF Gold university, The University of Kent.

The degree apprenticeship offers you the opportunity to work in a central government department or agency tackling some of the most important social, environmental and economic issues our country faces – all while earning a wage (Minimum of £22,450 in London and minimum of £21,000 Nationally) and studying for a degree in economics with the University of Kent, without the usually associated student debt.

Shape your future. Make a Change.

Consider applying if you wish to make a meaningful change to the lives of UK citizens and work alongside other change-makers across the country.

The Government Economic Service

The Government Economic Service (GES) is the professional body for economists in the UK civil service. Since its foundation in 1964, GES economists have been involved in decision making across government based on analysis and evidence, in order to make meaningful change to the lives of UK citizens.

The University of Kent

The University of Kent was selected to deliver the programme because of the strength of their economics courses and the support they’ll offer to apprentices throughout the programme.

This will be delivered via blended learning, a mixture of distance and face-to-face learning, so there is no need to travel to university regularly. Once complete, you will have an apprenticeship, an economics degree, and the experience of four years’ working in the Civil Service – putting you in a brilliant position to progress your career from there.

Your studies will cover...

  • Microeconomics: how individuals and firms make decisions, interaction of supply and demand
  • Macroeconomics: how the economy works at a national and international level
  • Econometrics: the use of data to test theories and evaluate changes in government policies
  • Option for further study of areas such as environmental economics

The Role

The apprenticeship aims for a balance of 80% working time and 20% learning time, via both distance and face-to-face teaching.

If apprentices successfully achieve a 2:1 upon apprenticeship completion, they will be offered a permanent role within the GES, earning at least £27,000.

In the GES, learning and development is at the heart of what we do. You'll benefit from regular performance and development reviews with your line manager, as well as learning support from the University of Kent.

As a member of the GES you will develop:

  • Quantitative skills: manipulating and presenting data
  • Writing and presentation techniques: communicating economics clearly and succinctly to senior officials and ministers
  • Applied economics skills: using economic insights and techniques to inform decisions on anything from the environment to transport

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Join an inclusive and diverse working environment that is both friendly and supportive.

We actively support those with additional requirements during the selection process and in the workplace.

We always encourage those in the GES to feel comfortable to come to work as themselves. Both the University of Kent and the Civil Service offer comprehensive wellbeing support as well the opportunity to join many diversity networks and support groups.

As a Disability Confident Employer, the Civil Service is committed to providing an environment that is inclusive for all.
