Mechanical and Electrical Project Engineering Apprenticeship

Harley Allen

I am currently studying level 6 Building services engineering to develop my skills in becoming a mechanical and electrical site manager. It is a busy time for the construction industry and I am excited to become part of its future, being able to work on different projects and enhancing my knowledge as I go.

I have been with Skanska for coming up to 6 years now, and its been amazing. Working with Skanska has given me the opportunity to expand my work experiences in different areas of construction. I am currently a trainee mechanical engineer but It didn’t start of that way. Starting with Skanska as a trainee they put me on a ‘rotation’ program, this enabled me to get a feel for different aspects of the company before choosing what I really wanted to do. I started out in estimation , learning the basics of electrical , how to mark-up drawings … I then moved on to site based work doing engineering learning the mechanical side of things, getting hands on with the tools and also the technical side .. from here I done a few months on the health and safety team going to different projects focusing on different areas each time picking up different health and safety issues as well as doing some training as I went along. This for me was the most exciting as I got to see different projects, meet different people and every day for me was different. Once my months were up I went to join the procurement team , this was completely different to anything that I had done before , it is mainly office based but dealing with the background of the projects again I enjoyed this and meeting new people but when it come to me deciding , engineering was the way to go for me. I am on K1 Knightsbridge at the minute and I have a great team and even better mentor. It was him that made me believe that I can do the job and progress my career to become a site manager. I recommend joining the Skanska team to enhance your career opportunities and find a path that suits you.
