  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role trains me to become an aircraft mechanic, it involves exams on the theory side of aircraft maintenance and includes lectures and revision in preparation for the exams. It also involves practical training for aircraft maintenance including aircraft marshalling, component removal and refitting, hydraulic testing, aircraft jacking and engine run. Additionally, metal work and electrical wiring and testing is also included in the practical.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, mostly new skills especially on the practical side of the training. Theory helped me enhance my understanding of aircraft maintenance, but the practical work helped me learn the most effectively. The practical also helped me understand the context when learning the theory side. Some existing skills also developed from both practical and theory training as I had some engineering experience in the past.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • As I have an interest in both aviation and engineering, there was a lot that felt very relevant. M8 aerodynamics for example allowed us to use a simulator to show example of aerodynamics acting on and aircraft. M7 and M11 practical was also really good as it was very interactive and motivating.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Reasonably well structured, overall most of our training was provided with a lot of support to make sure we succeed through our apprenticeship which helped a lot. However, time management for mainly the exam preparation felt like a challenge personally in the later stages. We also recently found some exam questions which didn't always seem to align with new notes we were provided, but was not too common. overall was mostly well structured though.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Yes, at least for the teachings, both theory and practical training. The instructors we had were very good at teaching us the relevant subjects and providing support when we may have needed it. There was also a decent amount of resources to help us pass our exams, the same applies to the practical training.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A decent amount, a lot of information is provided to us in the notes we are given which is relevant to the exam. The lectures and some of the practical training are also very helpful to provide context to the subjects we're taught. Some of the support were are given is sometimes interactive which helps with the learning.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The subjects I learn which are relevant to my qualification will definitely help me to perform in my role. The apprenticeship which provides me the qualification if I have proven well in my training will help me be authorised to perform my role. I think the qualification will prove my experience required for the maintenance role

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Ye, for example we did outward bound in the early stages of our apprenticeship, which involved being away from work for five days to given activities such as abseiling and camping. we also had a base visit at one point to provide us more context about the later stages of our apprenticeship.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I depends on what my friend would want and what they would expect out of it, there are a lot of different role which can be considered depending on what they see ideal. But from my experience I can recommend them BAE Systems if they see it relevant to their interest.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • For the Aircraft Mechanic Apprenticeship role, as long as they have an interest in either aircraft or engineering they will likely have an easy time. As long as they see parts of the role relevant to them, it will help prepare for the apprenticeship. I believe this would apply to any role within the company.
