  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Absolutely, working as a mental health support worker over this past year has allowed me to develop many valuable skills. One of the biggest has been strengthening my active listening abilities. When supporting clients, it's so important to fully listen without judgement, pick up on non-verbal cues, and make them feel heard and understood. I've also greatly improved my skills in de-escalation and crisis intervention. There have been situations where clients experienced distress or behavioral issues, and I've had to remain calm, use grounding techniques, and gently defuse the situation in a trauma-informed way. It takes practice, but I feel much more confident now. Something else I've worked on is my ability to build rapport and trust with clients. Many have been through difficulties that make it hard for them to open up initially. But by being consistent, genuine, and following through on my word, I've gotten better at establishing that therapeutic alliance over time. Additionally, I've expanded my knowledge of different mental health conditions, symptoms, medications and their potential side effects. This has helped me better understand what my clients are going through and how to most effectively support them. Overall, it's been a year of constant learning and skills development in such a meaningful role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I'm really enjoying my NVQ Level 3 programme so far. Although it can be challenging at times to balance my coursework with my job supporting clients, I find the material extremely relevant and applicable to my day-to-day work. The programme has helped deepen my understanding of core principles in health and social care, like person-centered practice, safeguarding, equality and inclusion. I'm gaining a stronger theoretical foundation on top of the hands-on experience I get through my role. I particularly value the units focused on communication skills, handling information and data protection. As a support worker, effective communication and maintaining confidentiality are critical, so studying these areas has been very beneficial. The work-based evidence I have to compile by observing my own practice and receiving feedback from colleagues and managers is immensely helpful too. It makes me more reflective and highlights areas I can continue developing. Overall, while juggling work and studies can be demanding at points, I'm grateful for this opportunity to formally upskill myself. The NVQ is equipping me with expanded knowledge and it feels awesome to work towards a professional qualification that will elevate my career in this rewarding field of mental health support.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I've been really impressed with how well-organized and structured my NVQ Level 3 programme is. Right from the start, there was a clear breakdown provided of all the units and assessments involved, along with a suggested timeline for completion. This upfront roadmap has helped me plan my studies accordingly. The way the programme is delivered has been excellent as well. We have regular classroom sessions supplemented by online materials, which caters to different learning styles. The tutors are experienced professionals who teach the theoretical concepts in an engaging, easy-to-understand manner. What I particularly appreciate is how the coursework assignments are structured to build on each other progressively. The initial units lay a strong foundation about core values and principles. We then move on to more specialized areas like supporting behavior, health needs, and enablement. But it all ties together cohesively. The assessments themselves are very practical and workplace-based, which I think is crucial for a vocational course like this. We get to apply our learning through observation, testimony evidence, and reflective accounts from our job roles. Overall, the programme is incredibly well-designed and structured in a logical sequence. There are plenty of resources and support provided at each stage as well. I feel like I'm developing a comprehensive, well-rounded skillset thanks to the organized curriculum. It's setting me up tremendously for further career growth.
