  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I manage implementing mainframe projects for UKBA, changes impacting UL saving and current accounts. The role is beneficial for improving my soft and hard skills however it is demanding whilst studying towards a degree due to varying working hours.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed new skills in software development (mainframe language COBOL), solution design and project management. Communicating with stakeholders and presenting skills are increasing which are versatile.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Digital and technology solutions degree with IT consultancy pathway is super interesting and has broadened my abilities. Whilst work is demanding and a bit stressful, the team has given me various opportunities of new roles to explore within mainframe. It just lacks the creativity sometimes that I crave.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well structured with University being once a week.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is quite busy but is always open for a chat. The team is supportive because of past apprentices. However the talent coach meetings have dropped off since end of year 2.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support has been invaluable from MMU lecturers and skills coach. They’re open to answering any queries I have during the modules, there is a delay on the responses sometimes but that is to be expected.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My job role is niche with mainframe environment so IT consultancy route (like others) does not fully allow me to perform better. However the course is extremely interesting, broad and versatile so skills can be applied to other jobs roles in the future.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, various extra curricular opportunities offered at Barclays.

    8/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Yes as the company takes care of you. However, the apprenticeship scheme does not allow you to choose your role and that can be difficult to cope with when disliking your role or team for 4 years.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • If you are unhappy with your role or team, communicate sooner rather than later so there is a possibility to change. Prepare and keep your CV up-to-date.
