  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a tech apprentice working in Technology Services, my role plays a vital role in ensuring that data-driven insights are used to inform business decisions, drive new automations and improve operational efficiency. As well as acquiring hands-on experience in data analytics; data collection, preprocessing, data exploration and data visualization. I actively collaborate with other teams to ensure their analysis aligns with the organization's goals and objectives and enhancing their digital capabilities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Part of the university course, I have learnt new technical skills; Python and SQL. I have been apply these to my data analysis work, as well as learning to work with new data analysis and visualization tools, such as Tableau and PowerBI. Also, through working on different projects, I have developed a deeper understanding of statistical techniques such as regression and times series forecasting.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme the university delivers is well-aligned to my job and responsibilities. Most of the topics I've learnt on the course, I have had to apply them in real life situations. As I'm specializing in data analysis, the data analytics field is constantly evolving, offering numerous opportunities for learning and growth. UBS has created an environment where they stay up-to-date with industry trends as the technology landscape is constantly evolving.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organized and structured with the 80% on the job and 20% off the job training split allows for a balanced approach to gaining practical experience whilst focusing on university studies. Also, the university course is tailored to different job junctions, this ensures the content is relevant and beneficial for our learning and career development.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • At the beginning of the apprenticeship, we are assigned mentors to help guide us in our career. They provide a lot of support in personal and professional growth; sharing expertise, providing guidance, personal growth and the importance of a building a network. Also, the apprenticeship team provide a lot of support. They run workshops throughout the year that focus on developing key skills. They are always supportive and provide guidance to resolve problems quickly.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university provides apprentices with a mentor that supports them in the programme; offering advice on specialism selection, provide guidance on modules and help with time management. Also, the module lecturers provide a lot of learning resources and very easy to communicate too. They schedule weekly drop-in sessions and helpful exam guidance.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The university qualification provides a strong foundation into relevant subjects that can be applied in our roles. In my role, the foundational knowledge is essential for understanding and applying various data analysis techniques in real-world scenarios; I'm able to develop practical skills and enhance my problem-solving. Also, by balancing work and studying, It help me develop strong time management and organizational skills which are crucial to perform effectively in the workplace, ultimately helping me in my career.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a committee of apprentices that organize social and professional networking events. There are many opportunities to volunteer and give back. Also, there are many active identity focused societies and sporting groups.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS?
  • Research a lot and develop a strong understanding of UBS's values, business areas and recent developments. Tailor what interests you and what your passionate about to your application; you want to stand out from the crowd. Preparation is key, prepare examples of your accomplishments that showcase your skills that fit into the role you're applying to. Also, at the end of an interview always ask questions, this can help you stand out and show your interest in the role.
