  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to assist the senior site engineer with engineering activities. I am taught how to use the equipment and various techniques to finish a task for the project. This may include equipment like ferro scanners, total stations, laser levels , automatic levels, theodolite and dumpy levels. You are given the opportunity to interact with other workers for different companies.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Working for this company as an apprentice has allowed me to further develop both hard and soft skills. These skills will help me further my professional development. Since being an apprentice, my organisation and time management skills have improved massively just from following and listening to senior members of staff.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed my degree apprenticeship programme so far and I believe it is a great opportunity. This is because I am able to work with people of varying backgrounds and experiences. The programme sets up apprentices like me to achieve the best I can possibly do. This is why I believe it is the best.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say that my programme is very well structured. This is because all training courses are implemented in your calendar and you get notified in your emails when you need to attend these. When you start, you are also given in depth detail about what we will do throughout this programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Balfour Beatty, my employer offer huge amounts of support. This ranges from IT related issues to HR and pension issues. They provide a software on all laptops that allow you to directly get in contact with a member of staff when needed. They also have a telephone helpline to speak to people.

  • My training provider offer huge amounts of support while I am working towards my qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i think that the qualification greatly helps me perform better in me role. I am able to better understand when and why certain things need to be done on site. The qualification also gives me a greater opportunity to further my career or possibly change career paths if I want to.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. at my place at work every Monday, staff at my office get together and compete in a local 6 a side football league. Every Tuesday a few people I work with rent out a badminton court at the local leisure centre and we play for a couple of hours.

  • I would recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend because of the amazing opportunities they provide. Unlike any other company, they cater to your needs and requests. the staff available are some of the most knowledgeable people you will be able to meet. This will help you develop into the employee you wish to be.

  • For others applying to a Balfour Beatty job role, I would say be positive and open minded. This company will cater to your needs and help you develop to become the best employee you can possibly be. Be yourself as the company looks to find the best candidate for that role.
