  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a developmental CSM which means I am assigned to support services in need of improvement, or I may be assigned to provide cover in the absence of the service manager, currently I am providing cover for a children's home which provides respite care where the registered manager is on long term leave.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been doing the level of work i am in for many years, so I am quite experienced, however the role I now hold which is more development based is new to me, I am learning how to compartmentalised and support multiple objectives at the same time. working towards my course allows me to reflect.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme in so much as it has allowed me to gain understanding and confidence of the areas of which I am currently working within. Assignments allow me time and space to reflect. For me completing this training is a mandatory part of my job, rather than something i would perhaps choose to do,

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I like that the course is digital and that i can see on the visuals the amount of work I have completed which helps to motivate me. I have found my tutor responsive in setting me assignments and keeping me on task. As i draw to the end it is feeling a bit more bitty as we try to find any missing tasks.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My support has been limited as I am in quite a senior position. my day to day line management varies depending upon which project I am working within, for example, some managers are more supportive than others at allowing time and space to complete tasks but I know that if i ask for support I will get it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my tutor has been great! she is friendly and supportive and helps me stay on track. She has also been very understanding when my workload has slowed me down a little bit, or meant that I need to rearrange things to complete safeguarding tasks. Thank you for all of your support ].

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has not necessarily helped me to perform better in my role, because my role has changed since i have started my course, but it has very much allowed me the time to reflect on the work i am doing and that is invaluable when working in such a fast paced environment.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not necessarily extra curricular activities to get involved in but the organisation has various networks i can choose to participate within, for example the women's network. I also get the opportunity to meet colleagues at our quarterly regional management group which really allows me to align with the wider organisation.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barnardo's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I strongly believe in the basis and values of the organisation which are: responsible stewardship achieving potential Working with hope and celebrating the unique worth of every person. When I left the organisation I missed these values in practice in the private sector i worked within and ultimately it is what brought me back.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barnardo's?
  • I think, being prepared to work hard, be prepared for the unexpected and always keep your focus on the welfare and wellbeing of the young people you support. Aside from that don't be afraid to learn new things and being competent on a computer will serve you really well!
