  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I travel from the accommodation paid for by Boeing, and go to the ICAT facility near Cardiff Airport. Here I am studying for my Cat A license, which will allow me to work as an aircraft maintenance technician for Boeing in the future. In the second and third year I will be on RAF bases working on aircraft as part of my On Job Training.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills so far in my apprenticeship. As I am studying towards my Cat A license, by the end of the three years I will be a certified aircraft technician. So far I have learnt several modules of the UKCAA regulations, and conducted several practical tasks in the hangar at ICAT.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is a lot of very hard work, but I absolutely love it. Boeing has provided many opportunities to relieve the stress, and due to the fact they pay for my accommodation, I don't have to worry about factors such as rent. My manager is also regularly in touch to relieve any concerns I may have.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is organised very well, with my schedule being easily accessible it is clear what is happening and when I need to complete my tasks. It is therefore easy to determine how I am progressing. My manager is in regular contact with me to relieve any concerns I might have.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer, from the provision of accommodation to live in, to laptops and private healthcare. We have many opportunities to progress our careers within Boeing i.e. they will pay the tuition fees of any relevant degree I might want to study in the future.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my training provider with regards to my qualifications, as they provide entertainment for us, a specialist to talk to about any concerns, in or outside of college. They also provide a safe working environment, with detailed instructions and assistance is always on hand.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The Cat A license I am working towards at Cardiff and Vale College is mandatory to work as a aircraft maintenance technician for Boeing, so it is vital for my career. My training provider is excellent in providing adequate tuition needed to pass my Cat A exams, and recovery sessions if I fail,

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few extra-curricular activities at Boeing, however these typically aren't official, and is more often our manager encouraging us to form our own Cohort five sports team to play against other apprentices. There are many professional networking events provided by Boeing, such as talks from other employee's of Boeing.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Boeing to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It's an excellent company that truly cares for its employees - this is evident by the support provided by our line manager. An example of this would be Boeing paying the tuition fees of any relevant degrees. From providing accommodation to providing private healthcare, Boeing offers a wide range of support for its employees.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Boeing?
  • Punctuality, presentation and politeness is key, and in any interviews it is important to just be yourself. Before applying, it is important to understand that it will be a lot of hard work, particularly the first year, however whatever you put in, you will get back and more, as Boeing provides many excellent career opportunities.
