  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Even though it's a Tech Degree Apprenticeship within a bank, what you do depends on what team you get placed in as it is such a big organisation. Personally, I have been doing a lot of data Analytics stuff, and using tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power BI, and a software tool called Alteryx to produce reports while trying too automate processes so that it's time efficient and easier for everyone. I also speak to lots of people of varying levels of seniorities to gather thee needs and wants for the visualisations that I have been tasked to produce.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Definitely, I have learnt a lot of the hard skills in terms of Python and SQL programming for Uni lectures, and Microsoft Power BI, Excel, and Alteryx from the workplace. I have also improved my soft skills which is much harder to improve, such as demonstrating leadership, or speaking to colleagues from a diverse background (my team is international, and I regularly work with people based in the US, Switzerland, and India)

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the people interaction a lot. As mentioned earlier, you'll be working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds, and you learn something new everyday, such as some fun facts about New York City, or Skiing places in Switzerland, and in general everyone is kind and willing to take the time to answer ay questions you might have. The job itself also requires me think which i do like, and time flies by everyday unlike in school since you're engrossed in what you do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The Degree part of the programme is will structured due to the University, but there can be more done with the work aspect of the apprenticeship in my opinion, as I would love to be guaranteed regular rotations across teams, but this is only afforded to University Graduates on the Graduate Talent Programme, and as Apprentices, you have to speak to HR and try to make a move happen.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The Employer provides a lot of support as there's a whole dedicated internal website to direct you to whatever issue you might face. Want to Upskill? Use UBS's learning platform. Have concerns? Reach out to your Line Manager or HR etcetera. Do not feel afraid to speak up if something isn't well, whether it's related to yourself or something external.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The University makes it easy to access learning material, and there's regular workshops every week to help you in your studies. Exeter also has resources to help you if you're feeling down, or are troubles by anything such as you might not be able to meet a deadline, or you have a family matter to attend,

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The programming modules help me to think more analytically when performing my tasks and attempting to create visualisations, while the business and communication modules help me understand the bigger picture of what my firm is working towards and how to best work with those inside an outside team to meet our objectives

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yup, there's plenty of Communities within UBS that you can sign up to, such as Football, Badminton. And there are regular events of all sorts relating to networking or earning more about what a particular team does by inviting a guest speaker. The Apprentices themselves also regular have social events, and you do't have to drink an alcoholic beverage if you don't want to

  • 9a. Would you recommend UBS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As mentioned earlier, the people because they are nice, as well as the fact that you're working in the top Wealth manager which has big franchises in other complementary areas to the Wealth Management Team such as Investment Banking, Asset Management etc. I also get to develop technical skills in a real world environment where what I do actually has an impact, how ever small it may be at the beginning

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS?
  • Practice the maths for currency conversions and time zone conversions, reflect on what you've done in the past and try to make a list of examples that you can use for the pre recorded interview and the general interview so that you don't spend a minute in silences wondering how you've demonstrated good leadership skills. Also, make sure you understand the Area and Firm that you're applying for.
