  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Answering client and underwriter queries. Placing new and existing business within our internal systems, followed by timely billing and the production of professional formal contractual documentation. Ensuring that all compliance policies are adhered to at every stage of business and striving to provide an excellent client-focussed service at all times.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have grown in confidence since beginning my role and have developed some good business skills, for example, public speaking, time organisation, priority ordering and team work. In addition, through my own studies, I have learnt more about the insurance/reinsurance industry as a whole. I have passed LM1 & LM2 exams which boosted my knowledge early on and are two qualifications ticked off already.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I largely enjoy my job, although I wouldn't say that I love it. My team have made my time here so far. They are a lovely bunch and really work together well as a team, always lending a hand to each other when needed. The company culture is great, its all about helping when and where you can and striving to be better. In this way, it meets my expectations.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme from my employer was very structured to begin with, but as my confidence and capabilities have grown, I now just learn as I go and through doing things myself. My team are very supportive, I have a buddy whom I can go to whenever with any concerns or questions and people always check my capacity before handing me work. I am allowed time in my working day to study provided we are not too busy with work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is really great in that he always checks in with me to see how I am doing both on a personal and professional level. HR are always quick to respond and my mentor has made my experience so far. She is so helpful, always answering my questions and pointing me in the right direction when I am unsure on how to go about something. My company couldn't do much more to support me than they already do.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • They provide workshops but these are quite spaced out and for 3 hours at a time. I don't enjoy them as they are too long and it's difficult to concentrate for that length of time. I have not been assigned a tutor or advisor. We keep being told we will be assigned a skills coach but 9 months down the line, we still haven't been introduced to them. Any time you have a query, you hear from somebody different. I do not enjoy it at all and actually the thought of my apprenticeship makes me feel miserable.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't feel it does at all. I haven't learnt a single thing since being on the apprenticeship. All my knowledge has come from carrying out my role and learning from my colleagues and individual studying. My training provider hasn't taught me anything so far which is to be expected when they have virtually no contact with you.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are lots of social activities at my company to get involved in. These are sometimes small within just my team who I work with on a daily basis, our wider team which includes overseas colleagues and the whole of the UK based work force. There are also weekly sporting events which I have gotten involved in. Since our company also sponsor the rugby premiership, we have been able to socialise at some of these games.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Gallagher Re to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is very welcoming and there is a real sense that we are one team, working towards shared goals. We are going to keep growing and I think it is a really exciting time to join Gallagher, as a result of that. It is a fun and rewarding place to work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gallagher Re?
  • Depends on the role you go for as to the assessment process. I would just say that if you get invited to interview, use examples where you have displayed team work as that is a big foundation of the success at Gallagher. Ask questions, no question is ever a silly one and get involved in as many projects as possible once you're through the door.
