  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is within the analytical chemistry team. I have had experience with reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography, LCMS purity/structural analysis and NMR structural analysis, problem solving and hydrolytic stability assays among others. Day to day I completed analysis requested by chemists, attend meetings, present my work in suitable forums and complete extra workplace projects e.g. software enhancement projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Every analysis skill I employ in the workplace on a day to day basis is a new skill I have learnt since beginning my apprenticeship. Thanks to the 1:1 and team training received I am able to complete complex analysis using techniques I did not know existed before! I have also been able to develop my existing communication and presentation skills greatly due to workplace opportunities.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot - the work completed in the workplace is interesting and varied. The community at AstraZeneca and opportunities for mentorship are excellent and bountiful. However I find the university work to be dull and repetitive in comparison although is a necessary part to complete my degree!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Within the workplace my programme is well structured but flexible to fit with business demands. Training and mentorship is provided and the wider community of chemists are always happy to assist with questions and training if asked. Support is always provided when requested. The university connections are less organised but have greatly improved over the last year.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is always provided through my line manger, wider team, specified mentors and chemist community when requested/when required. I am able to work independently and with support in a balance which I enjoy. The general attitude in the workplace is kind, supportive and inclusive and support is always easy to access and organise.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support received through my university training provider is sadly lacking. The work is boring and not presented in an engaging manner, university module leaders are unhelpful in both their feedback on assignments and when contacted directly although they are easy to access. The university placement coordinators are helpful, easy to contact and supportive now although this was not the case in my first 18 months. Overall I do not enjoy the university work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my university training thus far has had little application into my role in the workplace. The team I support and work I do is high level work which we barely scrape the surface of in the third year of university (of a five year course). The training I receive in the workplace is much more valuable.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are numerous social events organised through designated organisations in my workplace ranging from social dinners, pub trips, sports and training courses. There are also company 'Town halls' and networking events that are heavily encouraged to attend. Whatever extracurricular activity you want to get involved in it is likely AZ have it or if not would look into starting it!

  • 9a. Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The community at AZ is second to none - the workplace training is invaluable to me as an apprentice and I have the opportunity to be a part of a fantastic company right at the start of my career. The work is interesting, varied and has a meaningful impact on patients across the globe. I love AZ!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
  • AZ are centred on their company values, be prepared to relate to these in interview and if you really want the job make that clear! Really think about why you want to work at AZ in particular and be prepared to communicate this. Work experience is a bonus but not necessary - willingness to learn is a must!
