  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Supporting new product development processes and new product launches from a technical and process perspective and completing relevant process paperwork before first launches. Complete specifications for recipes and manufacturing using Hamilton Grant. Completing traceability of ingredients using SAP. Leading factory trials and liaising with site and external staff, such as raw material suppliers. Ensure strong communication with factory and technical staff. Complete and set allergen processes and procedures to be in line with BRC and other compliance boards

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, during my apprenticeship I have learnt many new skills. These include HACCP/VACCP and TACCP Training, Audit Training, Presentation skills and teamwork skills. These have all been supported by courses from reputable training providers. I have also learnt project managements skills and these are continually being developed in my job role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my degree apprenticeship programme. Not only am I able to earn whilst I learn, I am able to gain skills which far exceed my academic learning through university. I am also able to gain valuable work experience which will set me apart when applying for new jobs in the future.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is extremely well organised, with clear indications as to the academic and practical work that is expected to succeed. The modules for my course are taught in week blocks which is extremely helpful when being an apprentice, as you are able to manage your time well to ensure you exceed both at university and within the workplace.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plentiful support from my employer. This includes extra training to develop my knowledge and what I have learnt at university. My employer also ensure that I have enough time to complete my university assignments and extra reading, to ensure that I can excel in my university module grades.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training providor, Harper Adams University, offers lots of help and advice with my assignment and degree programme. They have a brilliant study support team who are always on hand to offer academic advise in terms of assignment and report writing techniques. Lecturers are also very helpful with topical worries or queries, to ensure that you feel confident in writing your assignments.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My degree helps me in many aspects of my job, particularly in understanding the different ingredients that we put into our products. This helps me to make evidence based decisions in the workplace, and feel more confident about raising issues and queries with more experienced members of staff. It also enables me to know more about the importance of allergen assessments, as this is a big part of my job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work, I was a charity champion for 2 years, co-ordinating charity events and leading a small team. Whilst doing this, I raised almost £10,000 for Together for Short Lives. I am also in Premier Voice, which is a once monthly group to discuss factory issues and put these to higher level members of staff.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Premier Foods is a reputable company with many different areas to excel in. There are jobs on offer in a wide range of disciplines, with something to suit everyone. Premier Foods will always provide training and opportunities to those who are willing to take them on, and put their all into them.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Premier Foods?
  • It is important to have as much relevant work experience as you can get. For example, working in a butchers, bakery or fruit and vegetable shop on a Saturday whilst your in college can really help to prove that you are passionate about working in the food industry. I t would also show that you are down to earth, and personable.
