Assistant Applications Developer Review

As part of the structured two year junior talent programme, we have various events every couple of months involving all of the graduates and apprentices in NWE Fujitsu. Day-to-day, I work on meaningful projects and am treated and trusted as a normal member of staff but with access to excellent support when i need it.

I came in to the role with a good knowledge and skillset of software development having completed numerous personal projects in the past but working in a professional capacity has taught me all sorts of collaboration skills and best practice knowledge to take my programming and teamwork to the next level.

The programme is good, very educational and a much better alternative to university for this industry in my opinion. There's plenty of comradery in the workplace and uni each week for it to be a fun environment to work in and the real-world projects give a sense of purpose.

Fujitsu has a very well structured programme, for the first two years of your apprenticeship/ graduate scheme you will go through a set of courses every couple of months with many other junior talent members from across the country and into Europe. These courses are designed to set you up well for the workplace providing essential skills and knowledge that are transferable between roles and companies.

There's lots of opportunities outside the programme to learn and more often than not, Fujitsu is willing to cover the costs of other training courses etc. to help you get the most of your time there. There's also lots of support in house, all the staff are very friendly and willing to help where they can.

Fujitsu is very accommodating with uni and understands that it can be very time consuming so on top of the day off we get to go to uni, we have an extra half day in the week to complete uni work such as assignments and pre-session content or readings. This makes a big difference and not all employers will do this.

The university course itself is a bit of a mixed bag, there's lots of content on software development starting from a very basic level but also some modules on business and personal development. As a beginner in the professional wold, this helps to orient yourself in the company and plan where you want to be.

Unless you live close to the universty, you likely won't be participating in extracurricular activities there but there's lots to get involved with at work. There's lots of opportunities to volunteer for events and charitable projects on company time to help out and make a difference outside of the company.

The apprenticeship programme is well structured and will set you up well for a future career with either Fujitsu or another company. There's so many opportunities to get involved with which can help build your personal profile beyond just your role. Taking an apprenticeship such as one with Fujitsu also provides an extra source of help and an insight into industry with which to apply your university learnings.

Do your research on the company and be sure to convey your passion for the industry you'd like to work in. Ensure as you consider the company that your values align and it would be a culture you'd be happy to mix in with for your time there.
