  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an Apprentice Technician Scientist, I support the Production Team in the cleanrooms. I am involved in completing routine checklists of equipment and laboratories, routine cleaning of the cleanroom areas, maintenance of cleanroom garments, stock control of materials, etc. I also perform manufacturing activities, such as buffer weighing and mixing, buffer filtration, etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through my apprenticeship, I have been able to develop different skills such as written and verbal communication skills, time management and organisation skills, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, team work skills and patience, record-keeping skills. Due to the nature of the job, I have also developed a broad understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice and all the skills involved in GMP.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • During my apprenticeship, I have had the opportunity to meet with other apprentices completing the same apprenticeship level and course as me, as well as other apprentices from the University which are completing different courses, such as HR and Management, Business and Administration, etc. I appreciate the opportunities I have received so far, and I enjoy being able to learn on the job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • During my working hours, my line managers ensure that I am developing all the skills necessary to match my apprenticeship criteria. During my study day, my training provider ensures that the content available is complete, accurate and up to date, so I can study and learn about different science theory aspects. I am happy with the way my course is structured, as I get to learn the theory and the practice.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line managers are really supportive. They make sure I have opportunities to learn new things, and are able to always accommodate me if I want to shadow a different department to learn new skills. I have weekly meetings with them to ensure I am happy with the way my course is progressing. The University's apprenticeship them ensure that I also learn new skills and get involved in different activities such as being an ambassador for apprenticeships. Overall, I am happy with the support I receive from my employer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a meeting with my apprenticeship adviser from the University of Kent every three months. During the meetings we cover any skills and competences that I have developed during my apprenticeship and how I am getting on with the modules, assignments and exams overall. My apprenticeship adviser is always contactable and is able to support me when I need to.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am currently completing a Foundation Degree on Applied Bioscience with Focus on ATMPs. During my course, I have learnt about the steps involved during the manufacture of a medicinal product, and I have been able to relate the module information to my work activities. I found that is helpful to have background theory knowledge when performing hands-on acitivties.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The University of Oxford provides a wide range of talks (in person or online) which I can attend. They are either organised by the Nuffield Department of Medicine or other university departments. I am able to attend the events and learn about the different projects taking place in the university.

  • 9a. Would you recommend University of Oxford to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • After having completed my Level 3 Apprenticeship as an Operations Technician Apprentice, I decided that I wanted to stay at the University of Oxford, as they provide me with the right tools and learning to achieve my end goal of becoming a qualified scientist. I would highly recommend becoming an apprentice with the University.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to University of Oxford?
  • I would encourage them to apply and complete an apprenticeship with the University. I am currently completing my second apprenticeship, and I have enjoyed every opportunity I have been given. I would advice others applying to look into the job role, understand what it is expected from you and ensure you ask all the questions necessary during the interview process.
