  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a trainee network engineer where I create fibre optic network and circuits for customers business and important facilities. We go to our exchange where the circuit begins and take to the outside world through many different splitters and nodes and splicing fibre along the way and making sure there isn’t any imperfection so customers be the best results and connection

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed time management skills as we have people in business and and home customers we need to insure that work is getting done efficiently and quickly so we don’t put people out inservice. Especially business as some business facilities run on the internet and it is really important we don’t let them get out of service as it could affect their business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the whole programme as I am always working around great and experienced people therefore everyday I learn new skills and ways to work around a difficult or a task I have never done before. As a trainee I always have loads of help if I ever needed it and always hands on so I feel welcomed.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say it is really well organised we have specific allocated days for workshops for the education side of the apprenticeship and loads of support with it. The working side is really hands on so we all get tones of experience which will benefit our workshops and we can discuss what we do in the network.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a lot of support from the whole team, my employer/ manager is always helpful however as a manager he is very busy so we have other team leads and deputy managers that we can reach out to if we needed support and help so we don’t feel suffocated or anxious about the job.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We do receive decent amount of support could be better in terms of discussing what will happen in the next work shop and tell us in the beginning what we need to do from beginning to end rather than finding out what to do next in the future workshops as we can get the work done earlier

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As we are doing a qualification we are always readings facts in training so it helps me perfume better when I’m outside and how to do the job the correct way and mainly the safe way which is is a big thing in our company. So it is a fantastic way to recap and do the job correctly.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Brilliant company work for everyone is always friendly and helpful when working on the job. As a apprenticeship it isn’t a lot but the wage is pretty good as an apprenticeship and when qualified we get pay rise and bonuses. Really supportive and non toxic company to work for and always have support lines for everything.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Openreach don’t want you for your experience if you’re ambitious and willing to learn they will happily take you on and train you with their great training. Also do show a professional side when recruiting end of the day it’s a major company they don’t want to recruit unprofessional people so always be polite and formal and be your self.
