  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Part of my role is to learn as much as I can from other technicians whilst at work, I would take notes daily on the jobs we’ve undertaken and also technically be an accompanying person whilst the tech [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] are working.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt so much since being at Gatwick. I feel confident in most aspects of engineering now as I get to experience several different departments through my apprenticeship scheme. I can confidently work on domestic installations whilst also understanding most systems around the airport. I am truly lucky to get this kind of training at my age.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it, getting to socialise and become friendly with different people everyday is not only good for your leading but also for your social skills and mental health, it allows you to be open and share things which may be bothering you or if struggling to understand a particular job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Extremely well organised. Us apprentices know exactly what is going on, whether it being a department rotation, company news, specific training to complete. We are lucky to have such a good manager who has also come through the apprenticeship so understands what it can be like, they’re all very on top of making us feel comfortable at work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Ridiculous amount, last week I undertook an electrical safety rules course, this being said I wanted some extra training beforehand. I contacted my manager and he told me to come to his room and we went through it for 2 hours, which I appreciate so much as I passed. They all just want us to do so well which again I’m very grateful for.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • They’ve helped us understand all the fundamentals of engineering so that we are ready to step foot into the workplace, they keep on top of our work and if anyone is slacking they are quick to mention it. They all want us to be the best engineer we can be so they are very helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It makes me more confident in my ability, when the techs mention components in a System instead of me asking what does that do or Googling it, I can continue to follow what they are saying which allows them to have more confidence in ym ability, resulting in me learning more technical systems.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We do lots of engineering projects outside of work, we go on out of bound trips every summer to socialise with all the apprentices and have a good catchup, which I love as all the apprentices are down to earth and all keen. We also do a lot of school events where we go around and explain why apprenticeships are worth thinking about as well as why I chose an engineering background.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Gatwick Airport to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • You can’t compare when referring to the amount of education you receive as-well as social confidence. Everyone is so friendly and willing to teach you day in day out. It’s hard to get much better.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gatwick Airport?
  • In the interview stage be yourself. Show passion towards engineering and don’t be afraid to share simple engineering tasks you’ve achieved, for example fixing your bike chain, what tools you used. Engineering is used every day, there is so much to talk about. Finally linking back to the first point, don’t be too serious. Managers want someone who looks dedicated and passionate but they’re also looking at your social skills, how you come across.
