  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • So far my role has been to find and repair faults within the copper network for end users on behalf of their service providers. Recently have been given my fibre training so will now be focusing on providing fibre to the premises and fibre faults. Also have frames training left to complete so i can work in the exchanges.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a wide variety of new skills, including being able to climb poles and houses safely with the use of tetra. How to work on a copper network that provides phone and internet services and now learnt how to provide a new fibre service from a cbt to the end user. I have also further developed my customer service skills when dealing with customers

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the job role itself. I find it very interesting and challenging. But if by programme you mean my apprenticeship journey then I don’t know how to answer that yet as I’ve had one email about it and the phone call I was told I was going to get never happen so not good so far.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Again the work is great and I’m really enjoying learning new a new skill set and challenging myself. But if you mean the apprenticeship programmme then again I don’t know how to answer this question because little to no contact so far, so no help provided to me as of yet.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is fantastic. From my manager to patch leads to the buddy who helped me learn the copper side and now my buddy of the fibre side. The support available to me at any time of day is brilliant. We have a support group for new recruits so I have multiple options of support from multiple people.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again if this is the training provider for my apprenticeship then I can’t answer this question yet. As with the no contact from the apprenticeship team I am unsure what is actually required from me to pass my apprenticeship at a high level. Job wise the training has been brilliant.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training provided by Openreach has really helped my learn how to work in the job safely and learn the basics. Being on the road with a buddy has helped further the basics into skills needed to work by myself to complete work. But again it’s f you mean training provider for my apprenticeship then the no contact about anything makes it hard to answer that

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not been here long enough to know everything about that yet. A Christmas meal was provided for the team which I was unable to attend and I have heard of a summer get together that is planned for the whole team so it sounds like opportunities are available to me.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It’s a massive company that has job security firstly. The opportunities also seem endless at the moment. Lots of training is being provided to learn a wide variety of skills. With great opportunity to further my skills and become more qualified. This provides the opportunity to earn more money as well.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be yourself for starters. That’s what got me through the tough selection process. Having a good work attitude is a must. The role is very physically challenging and also mentally challenging as well. If you have a family be prepared to stay away from home for a couple of months as I was not prepared for that. But it goes quick and it’s 100% worth it
