  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In this apprenticeship I complete a degree in Chemical Sciences and I have several placements to complete in work. I am currently working in QC. This involves doing tests in the lab on lots of different solvents and samples. At the moment I am focusing on training on the GC and LC equipment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt loads of new skills especially in the lab. Things like good laboratory practice when using different equipment and how to prepare different samples for testing. I have also learnt how to use software on the computers in the lab which at first seemed complicated. As well as these skills I have also developed my soft skills such as communication.

  • I really enjoy the Lab Science Degree programme at Syngenta as it provides me with endless learning opportunities . Everyone at work is really friendly and there is always someone around if I need any help. The work is enjoyable and is different everyday so I never get bored. The company culture is extremely positive which is really inspiring.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well organised as I had 3 weeks of induction before starting on site. This is then followed by 5 placements in different departments around the labs each lasting 3 to 6 months. I have 1 set day a week to study for my degree which I can either do at home or in work. The support is excellent I have weekly meetings with my mentor/supervisor to discuss my progress and fortnightly meetings with my line manager.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager offers endless support with any questions, problems or queries I may have. The same goes for my mentor/supervisor who always has time to explain anything I'm stuck on or anything I am unsure about. The support is easy to access either in person or through email/teams as the response is always quick.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Tutors are always accessible through email and the response is very quick. There is loads of support and understanding when it comes to working towards the degree and plenty of help available if you need it. The attitude towards learning is very positive and is actively encouraged by everyone at work. I really enjoy working towards my degree!

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Syngenta has organised my apprenticeship so the work lines up with the theory I am learning at uni. This is extremely helpful as I can see and understand better why certain things occur in the lab and why they show the results that they do, especially when it comes to learning how the equipment and machines work. I feel both my role and what I'm learning at uni aid each other in helping me understand processes as a whole.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of social events at Syngenta but in the last couple of years due to Covid-19, company events and activities have had to take place on zoom. These still help build a community within work and provide a positive atmosphere. More recently face to face activities have started to take place again such as ninja warrior and bowling. These are a great way to get to know people and make friends out of work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Syngenta?
  • Make your CV stand out with experience relating to science if possible. Try to sound enthusiastic in your interview to make a good impression to the interviewers. In your interview don't worry if you have to stop and think about what you are going to say, you are allowed time to think so don't panic! Make sure you ask plenty of questions when given the opportunity this shows you are interested and want to know more.
