  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in UK Operations, in the Sourcing and Supply department. My role as a Project Manager Apprentice is to take part in Supply Chain and Project Lifecycle Projects. The projects our team is involved in are really varied, from introducing a brand new product into different markets, to changing what a pack may look like due to different regulatory requirements. I attend team meetings, meet with my Project Management mentors who are guiding me through my first project as Manager, attend project meetings, and get involved with apprenticeship initiatives which allows me to meet new apprentices and share experiences.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently studying for a Degree in Project Management with Digital Technologies. As part of my studies I have already completed a Bloomberg Market Concepts and a PMI Waterfall introductory qualification. Through my apprenticeship, I will also complete the APM (Association for Project Management) qualification. I have learnt a lot during my apprenticeship so far. I have learnt how to act professionally and responsibly; I have increased my network with other professionals; and I have gained confidence and industry specific knowledge to support my projects.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme with AstraZeneca. I am treated as a colleague, not just an apprentice, and feel really valued in my team. I feel I identify with the company culture and I believe that AstraZeneca is a Great Place to Work! I did struggle with starting my first professional job while working from home, but the team are very supportive and I am lucky enough to now visit the office 2-3 times a week.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well structured. It is great that you join with over 40 other apprentices, who you can share experiences with. The induction was really smooth, although it was unfortunate that we couldn't meet face-to-face. I have been involved in a variety of internal training opportunities since starting, which have allowed me to improve and develop. There is lots of support available: I have a buddy, another apprentice from the previous cohort, and a mentor who works in my team. I have great support from university and my line manager and we have regular catch-up meetings. I often volunteer help to my team and have completed tasks for a number of the team - this really ensures I feel helpful and valued.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive good support from my line manager. In the first months of my apprenticeship, we had weekly meetings and as I have settled into my role these have reduced to every 3 weeks. Other than this, we can contact through MSTeams and email if I have any queries. I also can contact my mentor and the rest of the project team with any issues. Although people are often very busy, everyone is happy to assist with university assignments, or general questions about work. When doing something for the first time, I am partnered with a member of the team who will run through this step-by-step. Everyone at AZ is very happy to help!

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My course with NCH is mostly online - I have a 1 hour seminar every 3 weeks with the course lead. The content we receive is very well presented and explained and there is an option to set up a 1-1 call with the course lead at any point to run through a topic of your choice. I also meet with pastoral support, along with my line manager, every 6-8 weeks to discuss the course and work. NCH are happy to help with any queries or questions and I receive great feedback on assignments. I enjoy my course with NCH and look forward to completing it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am only in the very early stages of my apprenticeship but already the things I am learning at university is relating to my work. There are Work-Based Learning Activities to complete and often this will involve me speaking with members of my team and other areas of the business to link study with work. The course isn't industry specific so it is important that I can adapt my learning to the sector I am working in.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am involved in lots of extra-curricular activities. Firstly, I attend the gym situated on-site. It's a great way to relax after work and meet new people in a different environment. I also organise social events for apprentices that have moved into the area for work. Further, I am part of the AZinspire committee, who organise and host events to give Early In Careers Persons insight into the business and the industry as a whole. There are also lots of other activities that I am not involved in: book club, running club, choir and many others.

  • 9a. Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • AstraZeneca is a great company and is a really great place to work. The people are extremely welcoming and the Early Talent team provide the best support for apprentices. It's a great working environment and there are unlimited opportunities for you during and after completing an apprenticeship with AstraZeneca!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
  • The application process for AstraZeneca is initially written responses to questions. The next stage is to complete some fun games and then the assessment day. During the assessment day you will get the chance to learn more about the company and the role you have applied for, take part in an interview, hear from current apprentices, and complete a team exercise/presentation. My advice: for office roles, don't worry if you haven't studied a science subject or if you have little industry specific knowledge. Give yourself plenty of time to complete the application and ensure your passion for the role comes through as you apply. Don't worry too much about the interview. Prepare plenty of examples to discuss, ensure you understand our company values, and be yourself!
