  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a service delivery fibre to the premises engineer. Day to day I provide customers with new service to the fibre network improving their speeds drastically. We have to work over head and under ground. We have to have conversations with customers to install their fibre in their house the way they want it.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills since joining. I had no knowledge how the Openreach network worked. So now I know how to install and connect to the network and provide customers their internet. In previous roles I had to interact with customers a lot. With Openreach they have improved my skills and shown me new insights how to interact with customers

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the job. I like being outside and on my own because that's what I'm used to with previous jobs but also being part of a team is really good. It's good having the support from other engineers from the area. It's a great way to learn on the job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I find it has all been really organised. It's been easy to understand what we are doing now and what is coming up for us and working towards and end goal. I feel like I have really good support from my manager, trainers and colleagues and know I am not on my own.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a lot of support from out employer. I was given a buddy for 2 weeks but I feel that support has continued on from the 2 weeks. He is always there for me when I need him. Also the same can be said for my Patch Lead and Manager.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive as much help as we need and I feel like the support is there. Everyone we come across is really approachable. I feel like everyone cares a lot about the work they do and that transfers into support for us. I really enjoy it and it makes the work easier.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Our training gave us great foundations for our work. Once I went out into the wild, everything clicked into place and feel like I could build upon the training when working. The learning on the apprenticeship also helps on a day to day basis for the reasons I previously stated.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As we work remotely and all over and our team is spread out we try to be as social as we can. We have a team meeting every Friday just to talk to everyone and express any concerns. We have also set up a Euro 2021 sweepstakes to bring the team closer.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I really enjoy working here and I already have recommended to a friend and he has recently joined. The company is really big and feels like a safe place to be. Especially with the fibre roll out over the next few years. I look forward to being a part of it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would say take everything in your stride and let the information sink in over time and not to try and cram everything in one go. There is a lot of information to take in so just relax and let it sink in. As soon as you get on the tools it will make sense.
