  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my role is a trainee engineer, in telecommunications, working at heights or under ground, i use all kinds of ppe, different types of cables and equipment. I use my skills and knowledge to help customers get into service, and have the best broadband available to them, and make sure all work is to the best of my ability.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learnt loads of new skills, i have learnt how to use all different types of tools and equipment, how to order and stock my van, so im prepared for the day ahead. how to dispose of waste and cable properly, how to set up ladders and tetra equipment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • im enjoying my programme a lot, it has given me a new lease in life and a new experience i felt i needed, it has shown that i can work by myself or in a team, and if i need any help or guidance, someone is always on hand to help.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • my programme seems well organised and structured, even with covid and everything, things are planned in advance, and we know where we stand, where to go and who to ask or get intouch with if we need anything, ive learned new skills at the same time, using laptops and so on.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from my employer has been second to none, i have received all the support and guidance ive asked for, and the help and support from all the team has been brilliant, i asked for extra buddying and more training in underground work and more guidance and got it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support i have received has been really good, if ive had any problems or struggled with certain aspects, ive been given all the help and support required, im not too laptop smart, so have learned quite a bit through doing this programme and picked up some useful tips and tricks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel it helps me to grow and understand the role of my job more and heps me gain more knowledge, so i understand my role better and do my job to the best of my ability, it also helps me gain qualifications and pushes me to go further in the future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • i think they are extra curricular activities to get into, but with covid and everything, it has put a stop to most things in life and slowed everything down. I would like to get to know more info about these things as it could benefit me personally, as I enjoy sports.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would defiantly recommend openreach to a friend, since i joined the company, they have been, brilliant. You can tell they care about the work force and have lots of incentives for employees, they get lots of discounts with other companies and you get codes for family trps and days out.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would say the tips i would give are, just be open and honest, be yourself, work hard and do your job to the best of your ability and youll get the opportunity to grow and thrive at the company. The main thing is always work safe and use all ppe equipment, do your job, and treat the customers with respect.
