  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am in the global marketing team for the Domestos brand and work in the purpose team which is helping to fight the war against unsafe sanitation and poor hygiene. My day to day involves meetings with the local brand marketing teams and running projects which support the long term strategy for the brand.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills throughout my apprenticeship and developed both hard and soft skills. A lot of my marketing knowledge has been learnt through both university and also through the workplace and learning from other senior marketeers. I have also developed soft skills such as my communication skills and my time management.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love my apprenticeship programme and would recommend it to anyone who was thinking of going into marketing. To work for such a large corporation and work and learn alongside great people has made me really enjoy my time. It was the best decision to not go to university and instead find something where I can study and work as well!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Yes the university programme is very well structured as it follows a similar path to what normal full time students at London South Bank would study. There could be some improvement to specific projects and trying to tie together what we learn at university to what we learn at work so then we can apply the theory better.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive countless support from my team mates and also wider people within Unilever. It’s a very friendly culture and people are always willing to help you on any problem if it’s big or small. There’s also great support systems in place that can be accessed as well if required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from London South bank university and have multiple people available to me to contact with any issues or queries I might have. The lectures are always responding and also we have a lovely course director Katrin who is always on hand if we have any concerns.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps a lot because it provides the WHY to what we do at Unilever and in my day to day role. The original marketing theory rarely changes so is often applicable to the majority of what I do at work. Also the critical thinking at university helps me to perform better and ask better questions at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Prior to Covid there was a lot more social activities that happened. We often would go for drinks and have events for apprentices. There is always lots of professional networking events as well and lots of external speakers that you can listen to. During Covid there has still been many opportunities, just all online.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend to work for Unilever because it’s a great culture that has values which are true to the company and its people. Purpose is at the heart of the company, including the brands and the people and I genuinely believe everyone wants to make the world a better place.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • My tips and advice would be to read about the Unilever compass and their sustainability plans and targets as this is at the core of the business and big strides need to happen in this space in order for the targets to be met over the next 10-15 years. I would also make sure to research about the company history and it’s brands and think if Unilever is right for you as well.
