  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The role is a mix of formal training at college, soft skills training with the apprenticeship provider and then on the job training in the field. A typical day will be carrying out preventative maintenance and then prioritising fault repairs as they occur. It is very varied work and you can be doing several very different jobs in a day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt a lot about a whole new way of seeing the world. The formal education aspect gives a real insight into how Arqiva does what it does and what limitations and factors are considered when thinking about fulfilling its duties. I've developed fault finding and analytical skills as well as practical hands on skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme overall. The mix of theoretical and hands on is how I prefer to learn. The only downside is that it feels a bit stop start with regards to being away for the formal education so much which takes time out from being in the field, there is lots of good training though.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation at times hasn't been the best and I've been stuck with now knowing what's going on. It has always worked out though and I've received the information I've needed it's just taken time sometimes. I feel there's sometimes a lot to learn and a lot that I don't know that I don't know.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support and help. My teammates are great and are very willing to listen to my queries and questions and my manager checks in on regular 1 to 1s so I know where I am and what I'm doing. The apprenticeship provider also keep up to date with what I'm doing and how I'm progressing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider has set steady targets to meet as the apprenticeship has progressed. It has been tailored to myself so as I've exceeded targets, the new targets are set for me to meet beyond where I would have been. I've felt supported and that I can ask questions and get help at any time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification has made me dig into documents and search areas within my company that I might not have otherwise. I've developed skills in report writing and investigation as well as recording what I do in the field to keep as a record to look back on if I need prompts in the future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Recently I have had a seminar with the Institute of Engineering and Technology discussing membership and accreditation with themselves as I progress my career. It is something that I will definitely look into to keep developing myself and my career beyond the end of the apprenticeship. During covid lockdowns online quizzes were run between the team which was good.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Arqiva to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Arqiva is a great company to work for. They have given me lots of opportunities within the apprenticeship to learn and have experiences I wouldn't get any other way. The field work is good and engaging and there's always something to be doing for uni, the apprenticeship provider or in the field jobs.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arqiva?
  • It is a long interview process but it's thoroughly worth putting in a lot of effort to. You definitely need to enjoy or be able to tolerate working outdoors in all weather but you're provided with clothing for this. If you enjoy learning on the job and conducting formal education at the same time then it's brilliant for that.
