  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • - Tendering and procurement of construction works packages - Commercial management of Sub-Contractors including; monthly valuations, financial reporting, Implementing contracts, forecasting. - Management of site records - Liaise with & commercially influence/challenge site management team - Implementing commercial strategy - Prepare and agree final accounts

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When starting the role I was a complete novice, over the past 5 years of university studies and experience gained with Sisk I have learnt everything to know about being a QS. This includes, commercial awareness, negotiation, professional written and verbal communication skills, Measurement against standard methods, technical and IT skills such as excel and accounting software.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my job and working for a brilliant company. The opportunity and support they have provided to me has been exceptional.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Since starting the programme I have seen the organistion and structure improve massively. I work on a day release basis to attend Uni and my employer has been very supportive of that. The Uni and educational side of the programme is very well structured with modules organised and well executed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is always supportive and looks to help and guide me in any way they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Birmingham City University, have been exemplar in providing support and guidance. They convene sectional reviews and i produce a log of studies completed so they can keep track of my progress. In addition to this the lecturers and tutors are knowledgeable and approachable.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The Degree programme caters for a verity of different roles and backgrounds which a QS would work in, but on the whole I find that there is an equilibrium between my university studies and experienced gained through my employer. This allows me to benefit equally from them both.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I often attend CPD events through work which expand my knowledge of construction. I also play for a 5 a side football team set up through work.

  • Yes

  • They have good ethos's around caring for their employees with a strong emphasis on work life balance and employee health. They provide the opportunity to work on new and exciting construction projects. They invest in their employees careers and progression. I thoroughly enjoy working for them.

  • Be excited and enthusiastic about construction and the industry. Be keen and committed to carrying out your role within the business to the best of your ability.
