  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am responsible for the local authorities response to referrals for adult safeguarding concerns under the social services wellbeing act. This involves providing adult safeguarding advice, screening referrals, making Section 126 enquiries, coordinated adult safeguarding responses and chairing meetings. The role includes quality assurance and maintaining compliance with legislation and guidance.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • It is quite early in the course to evaluate what I have learnt and what skills I have developed, however, this course has made me reflect on my own practice which has influenced my own practice. I have learnt new things in relation to other professions which are invaluable when I coordinate safeguarding responses across a variety of different professions and sectors.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the course to date. I am fortunate to have a great mentor/teacher in heather who is knowledgeable, likeable and makes me enjoy my learning experience. This is important as it is challenging having a busy full time job, family commitments and her contribution helps me not to give it all in when I think it’s too much.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • To be honest there has been some teething problems as it’s only just been rolled out. It appears well organised and structured just like my experience with distance learning across the open university, Cardiff metropolitan university and Cardiff university. I find it easy to follow and access resources to complete the course.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer supported my application on to the course. I don’t do any study in work time as I find I am too busy in work and I prioritise my work and as a result I tend to do my coursework at night when my children are sleeping. This has its challenges but it is achievable.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Enough. I feel I am quite committed to my progress of completing the course, however, there have been times when I needed support outside of my monthly sessions with heather and I have found her response both rapid and extremely helpful. There appears to be a lot of content on their website which I can access for support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Again, fairly early days as I have only been doing the course for a few months but I definitely feel I have learnt from doing the course which has benefited my practice. I also advocate strongly for continuous development which is good for your mind as well as your practice.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Probably but I haven’t needed or wanted to access anything. I see well-being clssses, social activities advertised quite frequently on the local authorities staffnet. Especially in light of COVID and people work from home I have seen more well-being events ie online tea groups, jogs groups and advise in managing work life balance.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Vale of Glamorgan to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have worked for the local authority for over ten years and they have invested in me and supported me develop a career. The seconded me to complete a social work degree and support me progress my career through work and training opportunities. In addition they appear to have good staff feedback in annual audits.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vale of Glamorgan?
  • Do your homework and be prepared just like any other application or interview. It’s amazing what you can find online if you google it. Do some research on the team/division you are applying for. Eg the council publish reports which are easily accessible which could aid your discussion and increase your chances of having a good interview.
