  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Science Manufacturing Apprentice differs daily. Each day I have the opportunity to shadow different experienced employees and encompass each of their strengths. This can involve a range of tasks such as using the PCS system to control plant equipment, problem solving tasks to aid engineering work, aiding equipment checks, taking samples etc. With each day I gain more responsibility, completing tasks myself under supervision.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills working for Syngenta as it is encouraged, monitored and rewarded as improvement in personal performance. Some skills I have been able to develop are teamworking and problem solving. This is widely practiced as apprentices are encouraged to work together on a regular basis using techniques such as root cause analysis to find solutions for issues on plant. I am also currently undergoing a National Vocational Qualification to be passed at level 3. Alongside this the programme offers personal development qualifications in modules such as British Values, Mental Health etc. This really shows their commitment to the community through personal development

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My enjoyment for the programme is unmeasurable and only grows with time. I feel nothing but supported and appreciated by my employer/ee's. Each day provides the opportunity to learn and progress alongside different people. Frequent review meetings with managers behave as a way to aid progression but also behave as a support system whereby a trusting relationship is built. In addition, training courses such as CATCH and residential trips really keep the apprenticeships fun and enjoyable; it is a nice change of pace and opportunity to bond with fellow apprentices and become a team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is beautifully structured so that maximal experienced is gained; I have no doubt Syngenta will mold me into a fine science manufacturing technician. Training plans can be found displayed in all workrooms, with a digital copy always sent by managers ahead of time. This helps apprentices stay focused and organized, knowing what they're working up to.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • You can never be short of support on site at Syngenta! The main support system is through management. Regular meetings take place 1 on 1 to build a trusting relationship and whereby they can offer support where needed. It is widely encouraged on site to seek support from whomever you feel comfortable and generally anyone is happy to give insight or advice when needed. Issues can also be directed to HR directly via phone or email. Here all problems are replied to any only closed when resolved. Support is easily accessible all round site with access to counselling on a 24hr basis.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Tutors at college offer immense support to students. With classes split into small groups they can really focus their time on to apprentices. Even out of hours tutors respond to emails, questions and team calls. They are truly invested in each of their students and are there to offer guidance with a good attitude, which makes the course enjoyable and worth while.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel the qualification we're learning is directly linked to working practices on site and my role as an operator. There has been multiple occasions I have been able to apply the theory taught into practice, specifically health and safety units and those on instrumentation. It has helped me gain knowledge on the scale and types of equipment used on site and avoid damaging them via incorrect use. I have grown a much larger understanding of our industry from what they have taught us; it is especially nice to learn under people with such direct experience with my job role

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Syngenta offer a wide range of community events, most of which have proceeded even alongside the current pandemic. It shows to me, the company's value of networking activities when they have pushed for alternative means for them to go ahead through covid-19 such as via zoom. They have honored all annual events. They also offer a software called Yammer, of which employees from all over the globe can share insight into world wide issues, industry and the environment. I have found this particularly interesting as it helps us to stay connected with the world around us.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Syngenta to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have already recommended Syngenta to many friends and this is ultimately because I personally believe they offer the best apprenticeship around. It offers the opportunity to learn transferable skills, a competitive salary, progression through the company whether that be by promotions or further education and most importantly encouragement that you can succeed in anything you put your mind to. Syngenta has made me feel believed in.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Syngenta?
  • Advice I would offer through the application process is to make sure it portrays the best version of yourself. Don't feel discouraged to put the smallest of achievements down; they all count! Through the interviewing process I would advise to be yourself and show interest in the company morals and values. They are highly valued on site. Lastly, the experience you can gain here is immense and I am honored to have the chance to work for such a world renowned company
