  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves designing, building and maintain all things linked to highways. This includes roads, signs, drainage, lighting etc. This can be anything from a scheme to replace all street lighting to new LED lights to a scheme to replace road surfaces which have become worn to be able to patch up.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • While on this apprentice we are working towards a level 3 BTEC. While being here I have been able to learn how to use new programmes which will be helpful when progressing further in this area of work. I have also be able to see how people to communicate professionally for clients.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have been really enjoying my time at north lincs council. The team are very welcoming and are always there for any questions of concern. So far it meets all expectations of what the apprenticeship would be like and I look forward to the rest of my apprenticeships working here.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel it very well organised, we are given days for studying and also move team every two months which allows us to see all areas of the highways teams. Which will allow us to decide what areas we would prefer to go into at the end of the apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer and happy with this. We are often asked if we are enjoying our role and if there are anything that could be improved. We are also involved in monthly teams meeting which allows us to voice any concerns which we may have.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Every Wednesday we have a lesson in the morning, then we will do work in there late morning/afternoon, we are able to join the teams meeting throughout the day if we have any questions and are able to email thought the week if we need help with anything, responses are always fast.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do feel the qualification help to preform better at my job as it just explain things that we are learning on the job in that little bit more detail/depth that allows us to get a better understand overall. I helps me feel more confident when doing to particle side of the job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work there is always different activates, events, classes, challenges etc which you are able to join in with if you feel the need to do so. some examples are walking challenges or cycle to work scheme they also offer a lot of online courses/webinars if everything that's going on.

  • 9a. Would you recommend North Lincolnshire Council to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • While I do feel there was teething issues with the course. I have enjoyed the work I done so far on the course and the tutors are always there to help. I also find it helpful you can start at any time in the year and don't have to wait till September to joining school/colleges terms times which make the course feel some much more accessible.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to North Lincolnshire Council?
  • Have goals, explain what you wanting to get out of the course and the tutors will be able to help/guide you to the write direction. Make sure dead lines are communicated just as it helps when doing your work being able to set yourself mini deadlines to make sure all work gets done.
