  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, I work on the engineering, build and test of submarines. I am responsible for a number of mini engineering projects and shadow teamleaders and shop floor workers to gain knowledge and develop my skills. My job is a mixture of office based and shop floor based and I have transitioned out of placements rotation around the business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a multitude of both engineering skills, communication, project management and leadership skills whilst on my apprenticeship team. Through shadowing, attending meetings and undertaking my own projects I have been able to develop these skills and hone them to be applicable towards m y eventual exit into the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot. This would not be the case if it wasn't as flexible as it giving you opportunity to make yourself the best you can be through planned placement rotations and seeking out rare opportunities that you want to be a part of. This flexibility is all governed by my functional lead which provide support and career development.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is relatively structured by the Early Careers department however, the overall structure comes from the in-business functional lead who handles all of the structure, placement rotations and overall career wellbeing. This means that the structure comes from someone who can understand each of the areas you work in.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from a number of people throughout my apprenticeship including my placement manager and people in the team I am currently working with, my mentor, my functional lead who handles the entire nuclear early careers population and Early careers through skills coaches and line managers. This support varies from personal needs (financing advice if needed), physical and mental wellbeing support and well as career development support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Work provide and interlink with my learning provider with both having a member of staff with one of their primary focusses is creating a smooth transition and link between the two. As well as this, Early Careers are able to provide support through the college, with a near constant communication. The qualifications are also covered financially.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Skills learnt within my degree have some resemblance to my day to day job, however due to the niche complexities of the role within the business, it is not expected that these fully match. Through my degree, it teaches me transferable skills, technical calculations and safety and quality risk surrounding working within the nuclear industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the majority of these have been put on hold, however Early Careers have been able to put on some virtual events. Usually, these events would take place and be organized by the HAs themselves and have given the idea of networking. However, the majority of this comes from within the team which you are working.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BAE have given me the opportunity to get my degree and learn at the same time. They have given my job security and the flexibility to move around the business gathering different skill sets. From these skills sets I have been able to transition into a full time position. As well, the financial freedom has given me increased personal opportunities.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Be concise but detailed with your application. BAE Systems aren't necessarily looking for the best in everything (grades, extra-circulars, work experience), they are looking for someone keen to learn and that will integrate well into the business. I felt comfortable, yet nervous in the interview, but don't let nerves put you off, they only want you to do your best.
