  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working with my engineer. Travelling to various sites around the area. Anything as simple as a service to observing a re roping to general maintenance and repairs. Most days a pretty different as we are called out to repairs on a pretty regular basis as these are considered a priority.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently studying in my own time and on a dedicated learning day on the various components of lifts and further into mechanical and electrical engineering as a basis. I also get on the job practical experience with my engineer but am currently on furlow so that has stopped for the moment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The on the job training has been good as each day is rather different so it stays interesting. Some of the self learning stuff has been challenging to get the hang of without an actual teacher in front of you. But other parts of it have been decent and interesting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • For the most part it has been well organised despite COVID interruptions. The university was hacked and it took a while for it to recover as the website I was using to study was down for about 2 weeks but that’s not really their fault for this type of interruption.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support form my employer. I have regular contact at the moment with a weekly call with all the other apprentices whilst we have been on furlow. The training team have also been good when we have talked and are very thorough during the review meetings.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a decent amount of support from the training providers. LITS have been very good with their regular meetings and the odd general check ups. The university has had some interruptions due to the hacking of their website and we had some lectures pushed back because of this. Furlow hasn’t been that great either.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • That is yet to be seen. I am more of a learn by doing person than a classroom study type. I think I will need some more field experience to put the classroom type material to use and see if it has stuck with me. For now some of it has been practically useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not at the moment due to furlow and COVID. I think there will be opportunities like this in the future after COVID has passed but for the moment the restrictions are preventing this for the moment. I believe there have been events pre COVID like all the apprentices being inducted in person.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Otis Limited to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Otis to others as they take care of their employees. They offer many benefits and are in regular contact with their employees to relay business information. I’m not sure about any social events as we are currently furlowed and due to COVID we cannot meet up.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Otis Limited?
  • Just be yourself and go with the flow as things can change at a moments notice. Make sure you enjoy the work or its all kind of pointless. Try new things and push your limits and try to improve yourself. No two days will be the same so be prepared for anything.
