  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Defined under framework as: Any Electrical Power Plant & Equipment and Protection System requires testing and commissioning to confirm that the installation and operation of new and refurbished protection plant & equipment comply with manufacturers’ specifications, company procedures and the operating parameters. Working with other engineers, they will install, conduct tests and commission protection systems and prove the integrity of other power system plant & equipment. They will be responsible for testing and commissioning on electrical power projects and ensure that the work is conducted safely and, reliably, meeting customer, quality, time and budget requirements.

  • fault analysis methods in order to interpret results how high voltage power generation, transmission and distribution plant & equipment operates protection, control and telemetry equipment and the impact on the electrical network of its operation commissioning and testing procedures & processes failure mode(s) of plant and equipment and the impact on the electrical network and the knowledge to identify required remedial actions high voltage electrical network operations and topologies high voltage safe systems of work and risk management the application of Electricity Supply Standards, regulations and policies test equipment to select appropriate equipment for commissioning

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • There is a lot of support from the company to progress and develop, which I have found great enjoyment. I have also had great fun working with people from the company and my colleagues which is key. Overall, I have no complaints and have enjoyed National Grid to the top level

  • Pretty well organised with some good people who care about their jobs. It has been all over with COVID, but credit where fair as people have really tried their best. The prgamme has a good strucutre start to finish and I can see how i will meet my final goals

  • Manager = i have multiple manmagers who help a lot HR Team = plenty people you can speak to if needed Mentor = assigned work mentor who is good Accessibility of support = know all the areas i can seek help Guidance with problems = people to talk to good General attitude towards supporting you = good

  • 1 - Tutor / advisor = they are very helpful 2 - Accessibility of support = very easy to access 3 - Guidance with problems = plenty of guidance 4 - General attitude towards supporting you = a good culture throughout all areas of the business 5 - Do you enjoy it? = yes and i look forward to a long career

  • 1 - Does what you're learning on your apprenticeship help you on a day-to-day basis in your role? = it has been very well thought out and very helpful when on site 2 - Have you put the theory you have learnt into practice? = pretty much every day 3 - Do you feel you know more about your job/role/industry from completing your qualification? = definitely

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have helped 2 people get apprentiships in National Grid because they are a world class training and one of my biggest and best deciisons. Overall I would tell anyone to apply as they will support you and give you what other companies could not in all departments. Very good!


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • The application process = make sure you do you best Interviews = prepare for what you have done, don't use school as example Assessment days = dress smartly and be social Onboarding process = lot to take in but good Experience / opportunities = sky is the loimit What would you like to have been told? = the number of oppertunties
