  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in Salt & Savouries as part of the Extrusion team. It is my job to bring all the various ingredients for each Bisto Gravy/Sauce and bind them together with Oil, Fat and Caramel. My team then turn this powder into a granule and feed it down on to the lines where they are packaged.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication skills through this job because I have to keep in touch with various other teams to allow production to begin, end and continue when it is needed. I have also learnt new skills in terms of using tools and having to fix problems that occur with machines I previously knew nothing about. On top of all of this I have learnt a very large amount of information about Food Safety and all that comes with working in a Food Manufacturing Factory.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme I am part of quite a lot. I have been able to meet various new people that I now get on with a lot. I have been given a lot of time and space to ensure my college work has been completed. I have support coming from all directions when I need help with any problem. I have also been given the impression that I could continue my journey up the management ladder if I applied myself.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My course is very well organised and set out. We have been given full time lines of what to expect each month and when our course will change depending on Engineering aspects and end point assessments. There is a very clear structure to this course and it has been explained to us multiple times to guide us.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received more support than I could have imagined from my Employer. Every team member has more than enough time to aid you with any work or questions you have. I have been given any materials I need and have regular contact with my managers. I am also given a lot of support from all other departments such as Environmental, Training and HR.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We meet up once every two weeks to have lessons or one-to-one catch ups with our trainers. However, we have all been given e-mail addresses and phone numbers for our trainers and they are willing to help you everyday you ask them for any help. They are also very understanding when it comes to personal issues that may prevent you from attending a session and will help keep you up to date from this.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that I can carry out the same level of physical work as I could before I began my apprenticeship. However, I am now a lot more aware of every detail when it comes to production, cleaning or safety. I believe this qualification will help me perform better in terms of food safety and customer satisfaction.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At this current moment in time there are no extra-curricular activities due to Covid19. However, I have heard of various activities and social events that did take place in previous years. I am sure when we are safe to gather again that Premier Foods will push for these activities to resume.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Premier Foods to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have already recommended Premier Foods to friends and family because it is a very well paid job with a lot of job freedom. I have felt minimal stress whilst working at Premier Foods and I do a job that I feel I am very suited to. The managers are all understanding and the workers make a very enjoyable team. I enjoy my time at work and never dread coming to do a shift.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Premier Foods?
  • I would suggest that any one who applies does their research on the Factory and Company to allow themselves to gain a full understanding of Premier Foods. I would suggest they give the process time because it may take some adjustment, especially if you have been out of education for a long time. I would also advise them to utilise the full factory to their advantage. There are various routes to go down and people to discuss work with.
