  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my role is to fabricate steel beams or to weld on the fabricated beam. my responsibility is to make sure i work safe and keep others safe. i work on the fast track where the work is continuous. i normally cut notches and put on end plates to the beams but also check the dimensions of the beam is correct before starting any work on it. when completed my work the inspectors double check to make sure it is pkay to be welded on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learnt a lot of skills like been able to work independent, solve tasks by myself, working with others. i have learnt how the process works of working on a beam from start to finish and what to check. i have learnt how to operate a crane safely and efficiently. i have learnt how to mark out beams and how to gas cut.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i enjoy working with the other colleagues as they are all willing to help apprentices and the supervisors are always looking out for me and to show me what to do when stuck. they are a professional company and take pride in their work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the organisation is very good as work and Derwent training communicate a lot, which is important during the COVID 19 time as we have had to do the college work here and have helped us as much as possible to catch up on college work. the supervisors and managers are always there to answer any questions that are needed for college and are regularly checked up on.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i got put with a mentor for the first couple months until COVID 19 came. which we then had to separate and move onto fast track. they have tried to still help us if not more as we are without a mentor so the supervisors teach me a lot as well as other colleagues working in that area. if i have a problem they will always help me resolve it and are fair with you if you need guidance.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my tutor is very well organised and regularly send emails to keep in contact and let you know what is going with the college in general as well as sending feedback for work and sending new work to be done. i enjoy college as they are helpful and the teacher teaches you a lot about the skill.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • they have shown me how to weld with a better technique as well as the science behind it and gives me better knowledge of what other types of welding there is. i have put the welding from college into practice at work which makes me more confident doing work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are events that Hares take place in like charity football matches or tough mudder, however i have not been able to part take in these due to COVID 19. they do a little football match once a week which helped me bond with others when starting. the did football scratch cards to help raise money for local charities in the area.

  • 9a. Would you recommend William Hare to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • they are a good company to work for and get paid well for an apprentice. They give you all the qualifications they can put you through and have good benefits for working for them.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to William Hare?
  • I would advise them to research the company before the interview but not to be to nervous as they make it a relaxed interview which helps the nerves. Having all your main GCSE are important as it means you wont have to do it at college again along side your normal work.Make sure that you have an interest in engineering.
