  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently working in the services department, which consists of maintenance, such as exams and repairs. Then prepping units for service. As an apprentice I'm doing a lot of learning and trying to go out on the shop floor with the experienced workers to expand my skills and knowledge.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • A main one for me, is that I have learned to be confident in asking for help if I'm not sure, as I know it could cause a massive problem with service if I done the work when I don't know what I'm doing. My hand skills have got really good as I have been using new tools iin the depot which I wouldn't of used before.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been brilliant! I can honestly say I love and enjoy my job. Every day is different day which I find so interesting. Its allowed me to meet many new people who I can now call friends. Also many of the people I have worked with, have always offered to help me and expand my knowledge.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Within the depot it has been structured very well. However college has been slightly unorganised, I understand due to the pandemic we are in but when starting the college we didn't really know what we were doing and where we needed to go, as no one told us.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support we get from the employer is good as we are looked after by free private medical and receive many benefits on perks at work. Also in the depot I'm currently at, they have support staff, so if you have a problem, that being at home or work. They will talk with you and try to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Same as before with the college, due to the pandemic I understand but NTAR are the people helping us to get our qualifications. They pushed for us to get our work done quickly in lockdown and we all got it done, but then they took about 3-4 months to mark it. We were then busy getting reports done, so we can finish up. And they sent our old work back, then expected it back straight away.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe it does help me as its given me the knowledge and skills to be carry out the job I need to do. But working with experienced people have really made a good impact on my performance.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No, they haven't had this at my depot. However, we had an activity weekend at the start of my apprenticeship for team building.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bombardier to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As the company gives you so much opportunity. It's a great place to work where you are able to better yourself and meet new people. We also are well looked after with the benefits we receive. I also just believe the industry is just interesting to be in. There is so much you can learn.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bombardier?
  • -Learn as much as you can. - speak to experienced people in the company as will help with you learning. - don't be scared to ask for help as they'd rather you ask then do something wrong and prevent a train going into service.
