  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I spend my time in college doing a mixture of practical machining and theoretical learning. During lockdown the lessons have been online covering the theoretical side of learning.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my time in the first year of my apprenticeship I have gained new skills on manual and CNC machines leading to me being able to produce a workpiece within tolerance. I have further developed skills in communication and team working as contacting people has to be through email, WhatsApp and teams.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have very much enjoyed the experience of my program as it is a good balance between practical learning and theoretical learning. This means your constantly developing skills and knowledge in every lesson.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Considering COVID-19 and lockdowns the program has worked well and stayed organised throughout all these issues.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have weekly meetings with our Apprenticeship development lead and every 8 weeks we have a formal review about college and the work you have done.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • At Weston college you receive a consistent amount of support throughout your time learning. However you can receive further support if you require it by contacting your lecturers.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • On the practical side of learning it’s gives you a strong foundation on the manual machines for when your transition to the automated machinery. On the theoretical side you gain a good knowledge to begin your learning of your role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Within Rolls Royce there is the apprenticeship association that does regular social events throughout the year. However due to the current circumstances this has not been able to go ahead as planned.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a very highly regarded apprenticeship which gives you the opportunity to become fully qualified practical engineer. As well as this everyone I have met has been very friendly and willing to share knowledge.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • During the interview stage the applicant needs to be prepared with a knowledge of Rolls Royce history. Along with this you need to be confident in yourself throughout and play your part in any group exercise.
