Undergraduate Engineer Review

I am an undergraduate engineer working within the Personal Care category, having recently moved from the New Products Innovation, Future Concepts team. As an undergraduate engineer, I have worked across many live projects in varying stages of release. More recently, I have been working on the final stages of preparing a product for transfer to our manufacturing counterparts in SEA.

At the Dyson Institute, I have developed more skills than I could have imagined. Firstly, my engineering skills (mathematics, scientific knowledge, etc.) has grown far more than I believe it would have done at a traditional university. But also the vital skills of working daily within teams on real projects within a global engineering firm, such as presentation skills whether that be to the team or at a global product launch event.

The programme is tough at times but I have never regretted my decision of joining the Dyson Institute. When I was younger I often found school boring, I did not understand the point of anything I was learning but at Dyson you get to learn and then immediately apply many of the learnings on real projects within Dyson. I have also been able to explore other areas of business through events and mentors.

The Dyson Institute community of staff, support and students is ever expanding. As such the organisation and structure of the programme is great. There have been some small issues a long the way - as a result of being a new programme, but Dyson are very quick to learn and improve. If there was something we weren't happy with, the staff are always quick to try and remedy it and help.

Lots! Whenever support is needed I know that I can find many people at Dyson willing to help. Not only do we have great student support advisers for each year but also all staff are more than happy to provide support where they can. This support is also available from the huge wider Dyson network.

We receive plenty of support. I know that if I ever needed more I could simply ask and they would do their best to help.

Almost everything on the course ties in with each other. The academics studies are tailored to helping within the workplace and vice versa. We also receive regular support on the how to meet the apprenticeship standards.

Lots! However, it's not your typical university and it is in a slightly remote location so options may be limited compared to some universities. But, as Dyson has such a big network it would be difficult to find a sport or activity that someone else didn't do or that there wasn't already a club at Dyson for. Malmesbury is great for cycling and running etc. and we had a free gym!

Yes

It has taught me so much in such a short time and I feel as though it has set me up well for my future. I would not, however, recommend it for everyone - it isn't a typical university and doesn't have quite the same type of social aspect (drinking, clubbing etc!) that a normal university would have. That isn't to say we don't have fun :)

If you can manage your time well and enjoy being constantly pushed and challenged then go for it. It is a great opportunity and if you can give up on the clubbing side of university and the bigger number of students your age there then you will enjoy it. The salary is a perk too :)
