  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the lab where I carry out analysis on various samples and then generate data to make graphs and tables. I also collaborate with team members to understand the data I generate and suppliers to order samples needed for my analysis. The day also involves meetings that are both large and small.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed analytical skills and improved trend spotting. I have also learnt to collate data. My communication skills have improved as I have meetings and this has also improved my confidence levels. My speaking skills and teamwork has also improved through the delivery of presentations and through organising meetings

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot and it has exceeded my expectations The team is very supportive and I can ask questions when needed. I can also express to my line manager areas in which I would like to work and they will try their best to ensure I experience it. The company culture is one which considers employees wellbeing

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Received general induction at the start of programme as well as training such as manual handling and food safety training. Then when I joined my specific team, training was organised for specific pieces of equipment and techniques. I am also given 20% of my working week to focus on my university studies. If I need any support my line manager provides it or guides me to the correct person who can help

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. My line manager and team members have made it very clear that they are always available to support me and answer any questions. The HR team are always on hand to help with any questions I may have and there is also support available from occupational health should you need it

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from the university. Tutors and lecturers are always on hand to answer any questions and concerns. The university also have 4 meetings a year with a student rep in which feedback can be given. The university take on the feedback and make changes if needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Most of what I learn on the apprenticeship helps in my role on a day to day basis and I get to put theory that I have learnt into practice. I understand the theory behind what I do on a day to day basis due to learning on the apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activites to get involved in. The company has a pantomime club as well as away days amongst other things. There are also social events such as Christmas parties. Colleagues also organise sports such as badminton or social events such as boat rides on the Thames

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is inclusive and considers its employees wellbeing. There is a lot to learn and there are many innovative projects to get involved in and a lot of cutting edge technology to learn about. It is very rewarding to see products that you have worked on on the shelf.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Be yourself during the application process, interviews and assessment days. Try to be confident and speak up and answer questions when needed. If you are unsure of anything ask questions as this will show you are interested. I would have liked to know that the assessment days are more laid back
