  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role primarily involves building and maintaining data models for a business intelligence solution for our local markets. This involves data governance, data model auditing and reviews, change management processes and the use of JSON schemas and Object Oriented Modelling in PowerDesigner. I have also gained experience of Entity Relationship Modelling whilst at Vodafone, as well as building interactive dashboards using Qlik Sense for reporting purposes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Vodafone paid for me to complete two Qlik Sense training courses to be able to produce reporting dashboards for various projects. I have also learnt new programming skills using JSON and SQL that I did not have any previous experience of. The main skills I have learnt since joining Vodafone is becoming a confident data modeler, using Power Designer modelling software, to build conceptual, logical and physical data models.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed my programme from day one when I joined Vodafone two years ago and continue to enjoy the programme as I progress with my degree apprenticeship studies. My manager and team have been very supportive in giving me the training opportunities I need to develop and the exposure and responsibility in projects to become a valuable asset of the team even as an apprentice.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My degree programme is very well structured and organised. I have been able to find a good balance between work and study using the 20% off the job guidelines which my manager has been very supportive of. I have the independence to plan my time between projects I am involved with at Vodafone and completing assignments/exams for my studies. The projects I am working on are normally well aligned with my studies, which also helps with this as I can transfer knowledge and put it into practice day to day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has been very supportive in making sure the apprenticeship programmes run smoothly between ourselves, our training provider and our teams at Vodafone. Since my intake was the first intake of apprentices ever at Vodafone there were some teething issues to begin with but this has now been resolved by, the apprenticeship programme lead, who is very supportive of all of us.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Generally, my training provider has been supportive throughout the programme so far. The skills coaches I have had have been a good support network in answering queries and support with assessments/exams. My training providers most recent programme coordinator has been very supportive and communicated well with our apprenticeship programme lead here at Vodafone.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The skills I am learning through my data analyst qualification align very well with my job role, which has significantly improved my performance across the last two years at Vodafone. The knowledge I learn I have been able to put into practice at work which helps to embed the knowledge and become a key skill of mine.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have taken part in charity events whilst at Vodafone, as we have a number of charity leave allowance days where we are able to help raise money and awareness for good causes. For example, I took part in a charity doughnut sale onsite at Vodafone HQ. I have also attended a two day architecture forum in London meeting with several markets across the world to discuss projects requirements. This was a great opportunity to network and build rapport with markets involved in the same project.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Vodafone to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are endless opportunities at Vodafone that help develop your career but also help you to develop as a person in many ways. I have been very lucky to study towards my degree, whilst being very involved in team projects, as well as being given the opportunity to take additional training outside of my studies that Vodafone have funded.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Vodafone?
  • If you are unsure of what particular job role or area of the business you are interested in working in at Vodafone I would not be worried. Vodafone promote lots of networking and there will be many opportunities for you to learn and discover what career path you want to take. Apply for something you are interested in and I am confident you will be given great opportunities and support in your chosen path.
