  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On site and off site training in multi skilled engineering. I am currently in block release. Day to day I currently work with engineering mentors to learn and develop skills in mechanical and electrical engineering. I record some jobs I do and write them up for my NVQ assessor to see my progress.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new electrical skills such as testing and maintaining electrical systems and various motor types. In college I have learnt some programmable computer logic programming skills such as ladder logic. Through mentoring and experience I have developed a greater understanding for mechanical equipment and how to find faults and resolve them. I have also increased social skills in the work place through working with different engineers over the factory.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I generally enjoy my program as I get a lot of hands on work with parts of the factory such as maintaining modules, working on machine breakdowns and maintenance. Written work such as write ups are often tedious but I understand it is an important part to gaining my qualifications

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have found the work place to be well organised however college has been an issue in the past where it has been unclear on what goals and learning is to take place along with teachers being off or unreliable for information and help. My apprenticeship was originally 4 years however was changed to a 5 year part way through. This is fine however there was a long period of dark area where me nor my bosses new what was going to change and how I would be affected.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive adequate support in day to day activities and monthly progress updates. They are happy to help if I need it and talk through any concerns I have. I usually have a monthly review with them to check on progress, address any concerns and ensure I am on track.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has given me some core skills and taught me new theory such as electrical and mathematical skills that I use in the work place. They taught key and in depth health and safety knowledge which is very important in the workplace and I use every day to ensure I am working to regulations and safely

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are social gatherings organised by work every so often to go out and meet up. There is a football game type activity run once a year to my knowledge however I have not partaken in that. When the football season is on there is a small competition you can enter to back the team you think will win the up coming game etc
