  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently I'm in my 3rd placement on the apprenticeship. I am working in the Ice Cream Science and Technology Team for one year, mainly focusing on formulation design . The days vary a lot, I make samples in the lab, conduct tastings and physical measurements, analyse results and write up findings into reports. Recently, working from home I have been taking part in training and up-skilling sessions, as well as searching and reviewing existing literature.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've developed many practical skills of how to use equipment in the labs and successfully prepare samples and gather data. I've also had opportunities to practice my presentation skills. With the support of colleagues I've improved my scientific practice and knowledge and learned about improving experiments by using the Design of Experiment methodology and how to use software to support this.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy working for Unilever and being on the apprenticeship scheme. It gives you many opportunities to try working in different areas and expand your network. My team and most people I've worked with over the past 5 years have been eager to help and support me. The company culture is great, with relaxed dress codes and flexible working hours and plenty to do on site at lunch times, such as sports and clubs. The work is interesting and enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Within the placement's team, regarding the work I do, it's generally well organised and I have regular meetings with my manager, however the apprenticeship scheme sometimes a lack of formal structure such as development catch ups and apprentice meetings. However this lack of strong structure means that the placements can be quite flexible and if you want to work in a specific place, you can express this and usually it can be made to happen.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much support as needed. My manager is always available and helpful about any issues. Unilever in general has always made apprentices feel valued and treated just like any other employees. This is in terms of salary paid, and responsibility given. I haven't had any major issues so far, but if something was to arise, I know there are people I can go to, and plenty of materials/ resources available - such as mental health resources, and a Time to Talk team.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Great support from the Chemistry Lecturers at London Met, with fast email response times and always an attitude of wanting you to succeed. The university is fairly supportive, but some things are not always designed to accommodate part time students as well. The university has a number of support mechanisms to utilise if needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Now I am in a more scientific role, my university work links a lot more with the work I do at Unilever. My report writing work at university has been particularly applicable, and the skills from this put to use numerous times at work. The science theory learned is also very useful, particularly physical chemistry and its relation to ice cream. Experts at work are also very supportive with my studies and can provide advice for assignments and help to understand more complex science with real life examples.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, many. On site you can get involved with numerous activities, such as touch rugby, fitness, yoga, gym classes, amateur dramatics and arts and crafts. There's plenty of beautiful countryside around the site to go for walks around. Even with everyone currently working from home, many extra curricular activities are still going ahead over online video calling platforms, allowing everyone to keep in touch.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • A great place to start your career, with good benefits and many opportunities. As its such a big company, you can try out different jobs and work to move to whatever you enjoy best. The people are lovely and the apprenticeship community is strong. I definitely am glad I chose to do the apprenticeship.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • All the usual stuff - be yourself! Read up a little on the company, but express your personality and highlight your best parts. The assessment centre shouldn't be too scary so relax and try and enjoy it and ask lots of questions to make sure the company and job is right for you!
