  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my apprenticeship I do 4 six month placements, so depending on which placement I am in affects what I do day to day. I interact with the different teams in the logistics department, for example in my customer service placement I worked with the operational planner to bring their plans forward, and I would communicate with the raw and packaging planners to see if they could bring their materials in earlier. I would also deal with the MSO and work with them on their priorities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've improved my computer skills, on a daily basis I am working with different softwares to help me do my job. So when I was a raw and packaging planner I would work with SAP and PPR on a daily basis, whereas in my customer care placement I would work with APO and WMS. I am currently working towards completing my level 3 NVQ in logistics.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my apprenticeship a lot, I have enjoyed all of my individiual placements within my apprenticeship. It is very fast paced but I enjoy working that way, having to adapt to change. I also enjoy the team I work with, we all get on well inside and outside of work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think it is relatively well organised, I have been given training throughout my apprenticeship to allow me to complete my placements. I do feel as if I am one of the team, I get treated like I am at the same level as everyone else in my placement. I have been given lots of support in my apprenticeship, and I know if I have any issues with anything I can speak to my apprenticeship manager.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In my apprenticeship I have had my apprenticeship manager and then my line manager for whichever placement I am in. If I had any issues with my work then I know I could speak to other members of the team to try and help. My apprenticeship manager has been very helpful in giving me advice and helping me throughout my apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My assessor with my training provider usually comes to site every 6-8 weeks and we go through what I have got left to do with my apprenticeship. Most of my work is completed through distance learning, I get given the assignments to complete and I upload them in my own time. I don't go in to the college, I complete all of my work on site.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The great thing about completing an apprenticeship in which you complete work for a qualification alongside is that you can apply what you learn in your apprenticeship to your college assignements. In my college assignements I need to find examples to emphasise my point, so it is much easier to do so when I can give my own examples.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The department I work in tends to socialse quite often, we go out for food and drinks outside of work. In February, all of the apprentices in England went for a day event in the Leatherhead offices, we networked with other apprentices from different sites, and we listened to different people speak about how they got to where they are which was interesting.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Good apprenticeship scheme with qualifications. It's a great way to register your interest with the company, and is a really good way to get your foot in the door. Whilst doing an apprenticeship, your confidence grows as your ability and knowledge of your role grows as well. There is also a lot of support.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Just go for it, before your interview read up about the company where it started, the brands they own, what countries they operate in.
