  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am in a junior dev role this involves also some BA work. My day to day involves liasing with various different teams collecting requirements from stakeholders and acting accordingly. This involves using HTML CSS for front end web development and Python and Java for backend development. This involves talking to other developer BA's and others.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Ive learnt how to communicate with different people in my team and liaise with other teams around me. I have learnt the full end to end process of develepmont and testing. This includes the different types of testing and how to use css and html to add value to the companie you work for.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Thoroughly all my colleagues are really patient with me in learning my role and helping add value to the business. I am supported a lot by other apprentice junior and senior devs. I learn new things everyday and get a lot of satisfaction from fulfilling my role in the team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From the training provider perspective there is a lot that they can do better. For example we where given an overview of our apprenticeship after four months of working in our role. Which is very poor in my opinion. Apart from that the training schedule and exams are all fine.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a lot of support from my employer in every aspect. Weekly meeting with my line manager. Constant help from all the other developers. And everyone else in the team is there to help me progress on my apprenticeship in a collaborative way. I couldn't ask for anything else.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider Arch provides a lot of support on achieving the competencies needed to complete the apprenticeship and progress onto the EPA. But in achieving the qualifications (exams) they provide 4 classes for each exam. So only 8 classes in total on my scheme which i think is a very low amount.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Once I have completed the training and qualifications. They translate perfectly in to my role mostly all the stuff I learn I can use in my day to day role. Mainly most of the training and qualifications on the coding languages but also understanding the moving parts in a software development lifecycle.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes lots of different activities this can be networking drinks with colleagues and others in the organization. But there is also a strong apprentice community with at least two monthly events that we all help organize throughout our apprenticeship. This ranges from meals together and coffee catch ups to crazy golf.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great company to work for they put there employees first. For example in the case of the current pandemic unilever set a mandatory work from home before most countries started lockdown. And they also care deeply about the environment and sustainability. And it has a great ethos really relaxed workplace with an agile working approach.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Be yourself!! I know it sounds cliche but you have to make sure you show the real you. If you get through to an assessment day speak up make sure you are heard but you must find the balance between getting yourself heard and casting a shadow on others.
