  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Most days I will be working in the various different laboratories at AWE. The work conducted in these laboratories ranges from analysis of environmental samples for public and regulatory reassurance, to material specification and more. This work also involves making sure health and safety, coshh and risk assessments are up to date and followed etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed skills that I had initially learnt while studying chemistry and biology at A level. My basic lab skills such as pipetting and preparing samples have improved. I have also learnt new skills. I have learnt how to use different pieces of equipment and different analytical techniques e.g. ICP-OES and Instron tensile testing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed every opportunity I have had at AWE. I have been able to experience a variety of different working laboratories as I have rotated around the business. This has enabled me to learn a massive amount and I will be able to take this with me throughout my career

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The majority of the programme has been well organised and structured. I found the beginning of the apprenticeship however, was not so well organised. I found we were often left with no work to get on with and were bored, information was also poorly communicates. However, I know that this has now changed from speaking with newer apprentices.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel as though I am offered as little or as much support as I need. I know that if I asked for support from my line manager, or my mentors or colleagues, they would do their best to help me, whether it be work or college related or anything else too.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • 4/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the BTEC qualification that I am working towards does benefit me in my role in some ways. The content of the qualification however, is quite basic and broad. There is also a lot of units that aren't really relevant to my actual role. Despite this, it is still interesting to learn about and I understand that it is difficult to apply every bit of learning to different peoples roles.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there is a recreational society located right next to where I work. There is a variety of posters on the walls at work advertising the different clubs and sports available. I believe there is also a discounted membership for apprentices. We are also encouraged to register with a professional body, these communicate a variety of different professional as well as educational events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend AWE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at AWE so far. The variety of different work on offer means there is always something interesting that you can get involved in. I feel that there are also plenty of development opportunities for staff to take and believe my career prospects here at AWE are good.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
  • Take your time filling out the application form, make sure you include any achievements that will make you stand out. Although interviews can be nerve-racking, try to be confident and prepare for them as much as possible. Don't be afraid to ask questions yourself, it will be a good learning experience regardless of the outcome and you will be able to take positives away whatever happens.
