  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I work with our foods and refreshment brands to help create audiences and enrich our data in the data management platform. I get to see campaigns from start to finish which I find really interesting. Recently I have been working with our Data Scientists to help with analysis and work on my programming skills which links really closely to my degree and I have learn so much even during the times of just shadowing.

  • Since starting only 6 months ago I have really refreshed and improved on my math skills from college however, a new skill I am really excited to gain and be developing is coding and working with python this is something I never pictured myself doing or picking up very easily but now it is my favorite part of my job, I love it!!!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the data scientist degree even though it is quite challenging, I like how with this degree we get to go in for week blocks at the University where we have face to face lessons with the teachers where we can also bring up any challenges we are having and get to mingle with other student on the course from different companies to make connections that we can go to for help is there is a bit of work we are struggling with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At the very beginning I was struggling with the structure of the course which is understandable because we are the first year the programme is running as an apprenticeship so it was expected not to be perfect however, after the first contact week the lectures made a real effort to make sure they got in person feedback and have since tired to implement a much of the feedback as possible which I have been very impressed with.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager has been amazing with support originally my role didn't have a lot of work where I could use what I was learning from my degree and felt a bit like two separate thing but he make the effort to create connections with the Unilever Data Scientist and now has me working there once a week with hope to increase so I can work on real data science projects that help support the teams and it has really helped me to improve the skills I learn through my Data Science Degree. As well as that while I am writing my first essay he has offered his knowledge from his degree to help support me whenever I need and he as well as other high level team members have offered to go through my essays as a first check before I submit.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As this is a degree a lot of the work is research you do yourself but the University has introduced weekly drop in session where you can bring in any problem you have so they can't give you some more support. At the moment it is a bit of a difficult time with Universities having to isolate but the University have but in effort to make sure we are not completely left on our on. The University have an online platform called moodle where they have different places to get support and have discussion forums where you can post you questions for others to answer.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • With the new work I am doing I think it has helped a lot as without the degree I would have had no idea how to begin the programming journey as the university gave us all of the basics and mindset that that is needed in the way of working. I have been able to go off and have the freedom to develop these skills further through my job while also being given practice problems from the university to make sure I am continuing to develop.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At Unilever there is a dedicated team to organising social activities within the apprentices like apprentice meals, pub quizzes, nights out and more. I have made a lot of friends through Unilever that I can meet up with outside of work. The company its self has things like netball tournaments and the Christmas party and summer event to make sure as a team you a socialising as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Unilever as they offer a large range of qualifications you can study as an apprentice at different levels depending on what you are looking for. Unilever is a very well know Global company that gives you a good entry into the working world. The company itself gives you an amazing experience and a lot of support during your time with the company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • The very obvious be yourself, the main reason I say this is not just to get the job but mainly because if you pretend to be someone else through the application process that isn't you then once you get the job it will probably not be for you as recruiters and managers don't just look at who they think is good they will look at if they think the role is suited to you or whether they think that maybe the team don't match with your personality so you wouldn't enjoy it as much or that your strengths actually could lie somewhere else. For a bit more practical advise make sure the companies values and motivations suits yours and make sure you have example to back that up whether it is something you did at school or in a weekend job or with your sports team or hobbies.
