  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I rotate between placements every 3-6 months so work obviously differs depending on Department. At the start of every placement I usually get Placement Objectives which usually consist of 1 major project type objective and minor objectives that usually involve shadowing activities and then either leading them or being involved with them. Work is usually split mainly between carrying out the major project and the minor tasks throughout the day.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall the programme is very good, between the Engineering Degree I'm doing and structure of placement work I never feel like I have nothing to do and I'm always kept busy. The structure is well laid out and I'm always kept in the know of where I'm going next and what I'll be doing through my Discipline Manager.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Overall the programme is very good, between the Engineering Degree I'm doing and structure of placement work I never feel like I have nothing to do and I'm always kept busy. The structure is well laid out and I'm always kept in the know of where I'm going next and what I'll be doing through my Discipline Manager. However there was slight confusion with regards to NVQ at the start of the apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive support from various places within the business. Whether that be from the Head of Early Careers, my Line Manager, my Discipline Manager, my Skills Coach, my Placement Manager, or my colleagues. I'm always well supported by the above and know that I'm able to talk to them about anything I need.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Overall Furness College have been poor, The Degree Side of things are well supported and any issues are resolved quickly. The support in terms of NVQ has been poor, It took 1 year before they even decided we needed to be given the units for NVQ, we didn't have units for the set Functions i.e. Quality Assurance does these 12. We had to pick them ourselves and obviously this has caused more issues. The support given through out has been non-existent up until the last six months of my apprenticeship and even then "others are currently his priority" even though I have had 12 UPK Units and 6 Jobs for review from him. Since this has all been uploaded at the start of August 2019 - Now February 2020 and still very little I can be doing until those have been reviewed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I personally don't feel that Engineering Degree will benefit me that much whilst in Quality but there was very little options for a Quality Degree. However this benefits me if I am ever to move away from the Quality function and will open a lot of doors for me within Engineering

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Numerous sports teams, social activities, stretch projects, networking events to get involved with along with all the STEM Projects that an apprentice can get involved for example I have lead on the Lego Robotics Stretch Project which involved teaching computing/programming to primary schools through Lego. There are also numerous Apprentice organised events such as nights out/socials.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Competitive Salary, the best provider for apprenticeships and a career within the area whilst allowing on the job training and a degree fully paid for. The social side of it and moving around placements allows you to network and has definitely improved my self confidence and for me to come out of my shell.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Make sure when doing the initial application on line to post your answers in word as the time between logging in and timing out isn't very long especially when answering some questions in the detail you need, this also allows you to check the application for any errors as this can cost you and stop you from progressing to the next stage. Make sure to read up on the department you are applying for and about BAE not just about Submarines but BAE as a whole i.e. sites with the UK and else were around the world and what they make as this is always a question in one form or another.
